TORONTO -- Phil Kessel scored in regulation and James van Riemsdyk in the shootout to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 2-1 win against the New Jersey Devils on Friday in the annual Hall of Fame Game.
After two scoreless periods, Kessel scored at 8:12 of the third on a power play, his 10th of the season. It broke a 109:34 scoreless drought by the Maple Leafs.
The Devils tied it at 15:15 with a power-play goal when Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier couldn't handle a shot from Michael Ryder, his fifth goal of the season.
The teams would trade chances in overtime with Ryder nearly ending it for the Devils. The period's best stop came from Devils goalie Cory Schneider when he denied a 3-on-1 threat with a pad save.
Van Riemsdyk scored the only goal in the three-round shootout to give the Maple Leafs the win.
Schneider finished with 27 saves; Bernier stopped 34 shots.
It was the first game Maple Leafs forward David Clarkson played against the Devils since leaving them as a free agent this summer. Clarkson played 20:11 with two shots and three hits.
Toronto plays at the Boston Bruins on Saturday. New Jersey returns home to face the Nashville Predators on Sunday.
