Alan Thicke has plenty of reasons to be channeling his inner Jason Seaver. As the proud father of crooner Robin Thicke whose latest single, "Blurred Lines", has established itself as the song of the summer, the 66-year-old actor is reveling in his son's success.
"I've related to it, and understood it, and was able to feel it, up until only the last couple of weeks," the elder Thicke tells PEOPLE while attending the 15th Annual DesignCare event benefiting The HollyRod Foundation.
"He has now projected himself into a stratosphere, into another level, having raised the bar, the family brand, to unimaginable heights."
Although the elder Thicke is best known for his iconic role as the sweetly cheesy patriarch on Growing Pains, he is also a well-respected songwriter and composer in his own right. Yet now his 36-year-old son's fame seems to be eclipsing his father's – and that's perfectly all right with him.
"I occasionally get a good laugh by introducing myself as 'Robin Thicke's father,'" he says. "And though I cannot quite relate to the incredible success and accomplishment of his work on that song, now I just feel [like], 'Okay, now I just have to share you with the rest of the world now ... You are barely mine anymore.'"
While he now may have to share his son with the rest of the music-loving world, Thicke also gets to have an additional stake in his second eldest's recent achievements, having co-written the song, "Ain't No Hat 4 That" on the album, a track that can't hide those classic Seaver values.
"When I read some of the reviews for that particular song, they even suspected that was the one that I wrote because it was the only one without any cussing in it!" Thicke, who has also authored two parenting books, says with a laugh. "Robin is never shy about dropping the odd scandalous word, and being very sexual in his tunes, and the one that I was involved in had neither the sex, nor any trace of contentious dialogue!"
