The fans at Rogers Centre have let John Farrell know exactly how they feel about his departure from the Blue Jays this past winter.
The new Red Sox manager received a loud chorus of boos from the Toronto crowd as he walked to home plate to deliver the line-up card for the opener of Boston's series against the Blue Jays on Friday.
Farrell met with Blue Jays manager John Gibbons and the umpiring crew, and then tipped his hat to the crowd on his way back to the dugout.
After two seasons as Blue Jays manager, the team released him from his contract on Oct. 21 by trading him to Boston and he was soon hired as manager of the Red Sox. In the following weeks Blue Jays coaches Brian Butterfield and Torey Lovullo were hired away to work on Farrell's staff in Boston.
Farrell managed the Blue Jays to a 154-170 record over two seasons.
The new Red Sox manager had been anticipating the rough welcome in his pre-game comments to the media on Friday.
"(Potential boos) to me shows the passion here for baseball. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here (in Toronto)," said Farrell. "They've got a good team. We're looking to compete against them. I'm sure the excitement that's around the Blue Jays because of the changes they've gone through in the offseason, this will be a very good challenge for us."
