The Ottawa 67's will select forward Travis Konecny of the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs with the first overall pick in the Ontario Hockey League Draft.

"It's an historic day in the history of the 67's franchise," said 67's governor, Jeff Hunt.  "The last first-overall pick we had was Alyn McCauley in 1993, and he had a tremendous impact on the franchise.  We believe Travis will also be an impact player and I'm looking forward to seeing him in our lineup next September when we start the 2013-14 season."

The 16-year-old scored 53 goals and added 61 assists in only 54 games this season.  He led the Chiefs to the Alliance championship and a 4-1 record at the OHL Cup tournament.

OHL Central Scouting describes Konecny as "a very explosive skater" who plays hard on every shift.  The report describes his shot as "very hard and accurate," adding that he has a quick release and a hunger for the puck.

"Our scouting staff saw Travis and all the other possible top picks many times over the course of the season, and we unanimously agreed the Konecny is the best player in the draft," said 67's head coach and general manager, Chris Byrne.  "His high-end skills are obvious from the point totals that he recorded, but Travis also has an intense desire to win and a fierce work-ethic which rubs-off on his teammates and makes everybody better.  That's the type of player you need when you're goal is to win championships, and that's our goal here in Ottawa."

Central Scouting reports Konecny "hits like a tank and catches a lot of players by surprise because most players don't expect a player of his stature to hit that hard."
