Whether the quality loss in DTS encoding is actually audible to the average listener, I don't know (I don't have 'golden ears' :-)
But for those who do have golden ears, your solution is a good one, provided they have the means to play back multi-channel FLACs. I'm pretty sure my Squeezebox 3 won't.
