The Ottawa Senators got a welcome surprise at practice on Wednesday.
Defenceman Jared Cowen - out since the beginning of the season with a torn labrum in his hip - joined the team for practice as the team prepares for Thursday's match against the New York Rangers.
The 22-year-old defender has been skating since the first week of March, according to TSN reporter Brent Wallace. Hurt on Oct. 6 while playing with the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators, Cowen had surgery to repair the injury in mid-November.
Cowen took to the ice Wednesday in a regular practice jersey, meaning he was open for contact.
Sens general manager Bryan Murray tempered expectations on the six-foot-five defender's return, however, when speaking to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.
He told LeBrun that the team suggested he join the group, but that the decision to join practice doesn't mean Cowen is close to a return.
Murray further expressed hope for a late-April return in his conversation with LeBrun, but says still no way of knowing for sure.
