{allcanada} WHL: DE LEO HELPS WINTERHAWKS DOWN THUNDERBIRDS

Chase de Leo scored once and set up two more as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds 6-1 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

Troy Rutkowski, Ty Rattie and Taylor Peters each had a goal and an assist for the Winterhawks (8-3-1), who have won four of their last five outings, while Nicolas Petan chipped in with three assists.

Keegan Iverson and Dominic Turgeon had a goal apiece to round out Portland's offence.

Luke Lockhart scored the lone goal for the Thunderbirds (5-5-0), who have dropped back-to-back games and sit last in the U.S. Division.

Mac Carruth made 22 saves for the win as Brandon Glover turned away 37 shots in a losing cause.

Portland went 1-for-4 on the power play while Seattle failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Edmonton 4, Medicine Hat 2; Kamloops 6, Kootenay 3; Lethbridge 4, Moose Jaw 3 (OT); Tri-City 2, Swift Current 1; Everett 3, Saskatoon 2; Calgary 5, Vancouver 4; Kelowna 4, Brandon 2 and Spokane 3, Prince George 2.

At Portland, Ore., Lockhart scored 1:35 into the first period for Seattle, but that was the end of his club's offence for the rest of the night.

Turgeon and Peters scored less than five minutes apart to give the Winterhawks a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

It looked like the game would stay that way until the third period, however Rutkowski scored on the power play with only one second remaining in the second.

De Leo, Rattie and Iverson all scored within a three minute span in the third period to secure the victory for Portland.

At Cranbrook, B.C., Colin Smith scored once and set up three more and Tim Bozon and JC Lipon each scored twice as Kamloops (12-0-1) sank Kootenay (4-6-0).

At Lethbridge, Alta., Jaimen Yakubowski scored 3:54 into overtime and Ty Rimmer made 42 saves as the Hurricanes (5-6-1) slipped past Moose Jaw (5-5-2).

At Saskatoon, Joshua Winquist scored twice and Daniel Cotton turned away 31-of-33 shots as Everett (5-7-1) picked up its third straight win by beating the Blades (5-9-0).

At Swift Current, Sask., Connor Rankin's goal with 3:20 left in regulation was the difference as Tri-City (9-3-2) edged the Broncos (5-4-4).

At Vancouver, Cody Sylvester scored his first WHL hat trick and Mack Shields made 30 saves as Calgary (8-2-2) handed the Giants (2-8-0) their fourth straight defeat.

At Kelowna, B.C., Jordon Cooke made 27 saves and Dylen McKinlay's short-handed goal in the second period stood up as the winner as the Rockets (6-5-1) beat Brandon (6-5-1).

At Spokane, Wash., Dylan Walchuk scored the winning goal with just 24 seconds remaining in the third period as the Chiefs (7-3-0) downed Prince George (5-5-1), who have lost four games in a row.
