LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Jim Carrey is in negotiations to star in "Loomis Fargo" a feature film based on one of the biggest heists in American history, an individual close to the project told TheWrap.

Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite") is directing the film with John Goldwyn and Lorne Michaels producing the feature, which tells the story of four Southerners who stole $17 million from an armed Loomis Fargo truck in 1997.

Relativity is in negotiations to finance and distribute the film, which is looking to film in North Carolina in February/March 2013.

At the center of the Loomis Fargo bank robbery is the former company employee, David Scott Ghantt, who struck up a relationship with a fellow employee, Kelly Campbell who then introduced Ghantt to an old school friend, Steve Chambers, who helped pull off the robbery.

A spokesman for WME said Carrey was not attached.

Ghantt reportedly took $50,000, the maximum that could be taken across the Mexican border by law without further authorization, and lived there until he was arrested in 1998, with more money wired to him while he was there. The incident was the subject of the book, "Heist!: The $17 Million Loomis Fargo Theft," by Jeff Diamant, which was published in 2002. Carrey is represented by WME. Hess is represented by UTA.
