The Toronto Sun says good thing the Air Canada Centre didn't take out the ice when it seemed the hockey season was melting away.

Amid optimism of a collective bargaining agreement getting done during the next two or three weeks, the Toronto Maple Leafs could be back in action as soon as a scheduled Nov. 3 home game against the Chicago Blackhawks. They might even play the night before in one of eight games the team would have to make up between the NHL's projected restart on Nov. 2 and the middle of April. Under commissioner Gary Bettman's plan, teams would add one game every five weeks to complete their obligations.

Although fitting in a training camp and a full 82 games might be too much to fit in given the tight CBA negotiating frame, Tuesday's developments suggest the schedule will resume some time in November or early December. That would save the Jan. 1 Winter Classic outdoor match between the Leafs and Detroit Red Wings before a projected 100,000-plus in Ann Arbor, Mich. The ACC did not fill in any dates created by the lockout with concerts or the like and is waiting for its major tenant to return.

"We can be ready very quickly," a building official said Tuesday.

The Leafs were to play five in a row at the ACC from Oct. 30 to Nov. 9, against Anaheim, Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh and New Jersey. The Nov. 9 Friday night home match against the Devils was set to be the Hall Of Fame game, where retired Leafs captain Mats Sundin was expected to get a huge ovation joining Joe Sakic, Pavel Bure and Toronto native Adam Oates for induction at the Hall three nights later.
