OBERSTDORF, Germany -- Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond captured her first international victory Saturday, winning gold in women's singles at the Nebelhorn Trophy figure skating event.
The 16-year-old from Marystown, N.L., was second after the short program but posted the best score in the free skate to clinch the win with 170.19 points.
"It feels really amazing," said Osmond. "It was my best free skate ever. I executed everything really well."
Adelina Sotnikova of Russia, the leader after the short, took the silver with a score of 168.23, while Japan's Haruka Imai won the bronze with 153.64.
The Nebelhorn Trophy is the traditional season opener for senior international skating and features top junior skaters making the move to the senior level.
Osmond, the bronze medallist at the Canadian senior championships last season, added a triple Lutz and double Axel-triple flip combo to her program this year.
"I have a brand new program... and it's a great way to start a new season," said Osmond. "It certainly wasn't a perfect skate though and there is still a lot of work to do especially at the end of the program."
Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the ice dancing gold medal. Julia Zlobina and Alexei Sitnikov of Azerbaijan were second, while Nelli Zhiganshina and Alexander Gazsi of Germany finished third.
Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam of Barrie, Ont., were fifth and Kharis Ralph of Toronto and Asher Hill of Pickering, Ont., seventh.
"We aren't super disappointed but it definitely wasn't our best skate," said Islam. "We took a few hits technically so that's something we are really going to have to focus on."
