KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Sporting Kansas City forward Teal Bunbury will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee during a draw with the New York Red Bulls.

The injury occurred Sunday night as Bunbury was leaping in the air to set up Kei Kamara for a goal. Bunbury remained in the game for several minutes but was eventually substituted out.

The extent of the injury was revealed Monday. Surgery is scheduled for Friday.

Bunbury, who was born in Hamilton and is the son of former national team player Alex Bunbury, has five goals and one assist in 22 regular season games after leading Sporting KC with 11 goals last season. He has 21 goals and six assists in three MLS seasons.

Sporting KC (14-7-5) leads the Eastern Conference by two points over New York.
