{allcanada} ACKLEY HAS THREE RBIS TO LEAD MARINERS PAST BLUE JAYS

Match.ca

SEATTLE -- Dustin Ackley drove in three runs and Jason Vargas pitched seven strong innings to lead the Seattle Mariners to their sixth consecutive victory, 7-2 over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.

Vargas (12-7) allowed two runs and five hits. He walked one and struck out four.

The last time the Mariners won six consecutive games was May 18-23, 2011.

Toronto starter Aaron Laffey (2-2) lasted just 4 2-3 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs.

The Mariners roughed up Laffey for three runs in the second after scoring a run in the first.

Mike Carp singled, Miguel Olivo doubled and Trayvon Robinson had an RBI single. Brendan Ryan drove in another with a single to right field -- pulling his average to .200 for the first time since April 21. Robinson then scored on Ackley's grounder to first base.

Ryan's three hits were his season high. He's hit .279 over his last 36 games to raise his season average to .205.

Toronto's Brett Lawrie, hitting leadoff Tuesday, had struck out five consecutive times in the series before lacing a double into the left-field corner in the third. His first hit in eight at-bats scored two runs -- only because rookie Moises Sierra, who had singled for his first career hit, sprinted past a stop sign from third base coach Brian Butterfield and narrowly scored.

Vargas laboured through a 30-pitch inning and had thrown 62 pitches by the end of the third.

But, Vargas then retired 10 straight before Yunel Escobar led off the seventh with a hit. Rajai Davis also singled in the seventh, though Vargas would rebound to get consecutive flyouts from Jeff Mathis and Sierra.

Laffey hit Carp to load the bases in the fifth. Brandon Lyon was summoned from the bullpen, and he allowed a two-run single up the middle by Olivo to make it 7-2.

Ackley hit Laffey's first pitch of the game for his second career leadoff homer and seventh of the season overall. Ackley also drove in a run in the fourth on a fielder's choice. Robinson hustled for a double to start the inning off.

Escobar hit a line drive that Kyle Seager caught to open the fourth. Seager was positioned in front of the third base bag and the force of the ball almost pulled his glove off and spun him around.

NOTES: The Mariners called up relievers Carter Capps and Stephen Pryor from Triple-A Tacoma to take the place of traded relievers Brandon League and Steve Delabar. . Delabar made his Blue Jays debut a night after being traded from Seattle. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning. ... Outfielder Eric Thames, whom the Mariners traded for Monday, also joined the club. . Sierra was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. He got the start in right field.

{allcanada} MASTODON And FEIST Release Digital Version Of Record Store Day Split Single 'Feistodon'

Match.ca

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON and Canadian singer-songwriter Feist have announced that they have released a digital version of their popular seven-inch vinyl single, "A Commotion" / "Black Tongue" via Warner Bros. Records and Cherrytree/Interscope Records. The tracks are available at all participating digital retailers. This highly sought-after release also includes a special interactive "A Commotion" music video directed by Vice Cooler, and also premiere today on www.listentofeist.com and www.mastodonrocks.com. The video is launched by an HTML5 "Feistodon" video app that allows users to crossfade between Feist and MASTODON's versions of the "A Commotion" to make their own unique versions.

The "Feistodon" split-single was one of the most in-demand exclusives during Record Store Day this past April 21. It features MASTODON covering the Feist song "A Commotion", from her current highly acclaimed current album "Metals" (Interscope) while Feist covers MASTODON's "Black Tongue" — a track from the rock band's critically lauded present album "The Hunter". Only 5000 color vinyl seven-inch singles were pressed up and sold out instantly.

"It's a wet dream to have MASTODON take one of my songs and put it into their massive machine," Feist told RollingStone.com.

"We didn't tell her what to do, and she didn't tell us what to do," says MASTODON guitarist Bill Kelliher. "'A Commotion' just kind of stuck out to me. I could hear the opening riff, a single A-note."

Feist told RollingStone.com that she based her decision on which MASTODON song to cover by finding a track whose lyrics resonated with her the most. "MASTODON fans would probably be disappointed to know that I actually didn't know MASTODON very well," She says. "I actually went onto one of those lyric websites, and I scrolled through 50 songs and just narrowed it down to the ones I thought I could wrap myself around the words. 'Black Tongue' is speaking in my kind of elemental language — about diamond and earth and sky. It's all just in a language that I already sort of speak lyrically. It was pretty easy to climb into that one."

In a recent interview with Sweden's Metalshrine, MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor explained how the single idea came about. "We did [the BBC television show 'Later... With Jools Holland'], and right after we got off stage, we went backstage and and we were in the hallway with [Feist], and she was talking to [MASTODON vocalist/guitarist] Brent [Hinds]. They were involved in a conversation and were just like, 'Yeah, let's do that! We should do it for Record Store Day!' Something out of left field and something we'd like to be involved with more of."

He added, "It's fun for us. I mean, most times we end up doing covers of bands that are already sort of heavy or that is already in that vein, like the MELVINS, THIN LIZZY, METALLICA, you know what I mean? What are you gonna do to those songs to make them your own? It's kinda difficult and especially with stuff like METALLICA or the MELVINS where we're so kinda familiar and in love with the versions that METALLICA and the MELVINS and THIN LIZZY have created, you wanna make it sound like theirs because that's what you're so used to hearing. You don't really wanna mess with it. With Feist, it's something that we could really play with and do something different with."

{allcanada} RANGERS ADD TO THE MOUND ACQUIRING DEMPSTER FROM CUBS

Match.ca

CHICAGO -- The Texas Rangers won the Ryan Dempster sweepstakes, acquiring the Chicago Cubs ace for two minor leaguers moments before Tuesday's trade deadline.

The AL West leaders fortified their rotation for the stretch run, sending infielder Christian Villanueva and pitcher Kyle Hendricks to Chicago.

Dempster, who had power to block deals, had refused to approve a trade to Atlanta last week. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees also tried to land the 35-year-old righty.

"It's a great opportunity over there," Dempster said. "It's not going to be easy. There are a lot of teams out there that are really good. I think they have as good a chance as anybody."

Dempster was 5-5 with a 2.25 ERA in 16 games for the Cubs and can become a free agent after the season. He was one of several players Chicago traded in a 24-hour span, with pitcher Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson going to Atlanta and catcher Geovany Soto to Texas.

Teams had until 4 p.m. EDT to complete trades without waivers. From now until the end of the season, clubs have a chance to claim players before they are dealt.

With a strong season that included a 33-inning scoreless streak, Dempster was one of the most attractive pitchers on the market. The Rangers were looking for pitching help even though they began the day leading with a 59-42 record and a 3 1/2-game lead over Oakland in the AL West.

The Dempster trade came less than a week after the division rival Los Angeles Angels got former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke in a swap with Milwaukee. Many fans expected Texas to counter with a big move, and the Rangers pulled it off.

The two-time AL champion Rangers needed help with their rotation.

Right-hander Colby Lewis underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn flexor tendon in his elbow and will miss the remainder of the season. Roy Oswalt has struggled, too, since signing as a free agent in midseason and is being moved to the bullpen.

"He might be a guy like Colby (Lewis)," Rangers outfielder David Murphy said. "I loved seeing a guy like that pounding the strike zone and working late into games. (Dempster) might have an advantage off the bat because not many guys in this league have seen him much at all."

The Cubs had agreed to deal Dempster to Atlanta last week, but he did not give his approval.

"I just never said no," he said, adding he needed time to think about it. "The last few days, I had to give it a lot more thought to the teams I might possibly be traded to."

Did he make the right decision?

"We'll see," said Dempster, a third-round draft pick by Texas in 1995. "There's no right or wrong decision. There's just journeys in life that we end up taking. We try to make the most out of those. They've got a great ballclub down there. They've got some really good baseball players."

His preference was to play for the Dodgers, and although the teams remained in contact right until the end, general manager Jed Hoyer said they were never really close.

Dempster spent the last few hours before the deadline in the Cubs' offices, and when it became clear a deal with the Dodgers was unlikely, he allowed other teams to get in the running.

Hoyer insisted there was no lingering animosity over the Braves deal falling apart, although they did have to hash out some things.

"There were a lot of conversations," Hoyer said. "It's hard. He felt like he had a place he wanted to go. ... He wasn't unprepared to make a decision, but I think when the decision actually came and there was the finality of it, he wanted to wait a little longer and explore his options."

"So there were a lot of conversations. I think he indicated the communication with the front office has been good. ... We wouldn't be doing our job and we wouldn't have been fair to Atlanta if we weren't constantly in communication with Ryan," he said.

With a contract set to expire after the season ends, Dempster simply wasn't part of the plan with the Cubs in a rebuilding mode. They hired president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and Hoyer, hoping they could put together the first championship since 1908 after they helped build two title winners in Boston, ending a long drought there.

Had the Rangers deal not gone through, Hoyer said Dempster probably would have remained a Cub. He was scheduled to start Tuesday against Pittsburgh, but Casey Coleman took his spot after being recalled from Triple-A Iowa along with infielder Adrian Cardenas and catcher Welington Castillo.

Hoyer said teams had also shown interest in outfielder Alfonso Soriano and pitcher Matt Garza, but they remained with the Cubs. The fact that Garza has been sidelined lately by a slight fluid buildup in his right triceps area didn't help his value. The Cubs hope he'll be ready to pitch Tuesday at San Diego.

"The timing didn't allow teams to feel like they could see him out on the mound and I understand that," Hoyer said. "Teams are making trades this time of year to try to win the World Series."

A Garza deal would have left the Cubs without their top three starters.

The Dempster trade is just the latest in a series of moves for a franchise that dealt the troubled Carlos Zambrano to Miami in the off-season and hired manager Dale Sveum to replace Mike Quade. They're trying to stock up on prospects, particularly pitchers, and that meant saying goodbye to a popular team leader who was active in the community.

Dempster was coming off Tommy John surgery and had been released by the Reds when he signed with the Cubs before the 2004 season. He spent several years as the closer after replacing LaTroy Hawkins before being moved back to the rotation in 2008. He responded with a career-high 17 wins and a 2.96 ERA for their most recent division winner, and he's been mostly steady ever since, rebounding from a difficult season last year.

"He knows how to make adjustments," Soto said. "He's known how to reinvent himself. Whatever he's been doing has been working."

The 22-year-old Hendricks was 5-8 with a 2.82 ERA at Class A Myrtle Beach. The right-hander was a Carolina League All-Star, and has struck out 112 and walked just 15 batters in 130 2-3 innings.

The 21-year-old Villanueva is hitting .285 with 10 home runs and 59 RBIs with Myrtle Beach.

{allcanada} QUARTERBACK RAY LEADING WAY FOR RESURGENT ARGONAUTS

Match.ca

TORONTO - It hasn't taken Ricky Ray long to make a positive impact on the Toronto Argonauts.

Toronto made huge headlines in December when it acquired the veteran quarterback in a blockbuster deal with the Edmonton Eskimos for journeyman Steven Jyles, kicker Grant Shaw and a 2012 first-round draft pick. After early struggles, Ray has shown the poise and polish of a nine-year veteran and helped transform the Argos into East Division contenders under rookie head coach Scott Milanovich.

Through five weeks, Toronto (3-2) is not only tied with Hamilton atop the East Division but in a five-way tie for the league's best record. Heady stuff for an Argos squad that finished last in the conference last year and missed the CFL playoffs for the third time in four years.

Ray has settled nicely into Milanovich's offence, having completed 69 per cent of his passes and standing second overall in CFL passing with 1,542 yards — just 91 yards behind Montreal's Anthony Calvillo. The two-time Grey Cup champion has twice as many touchdown passes (eight) to interceptions (four).

Jyles' transition in Edmonton hasn't been nearly as dramatic. He has completed 56.3 per cent of his passes for 993 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions although the Eskimos are among the clubs with a 3-2 mark.

But Edmonton is heavily riding a stout defence that's allowing a league-low 15.8 points per game and has a CFL-high 14 sacks. The Eskimos' offence is ranked last in total yards (308.8 per game) and passing (239.6 yards) and second-last in scoring (22.2 points per game) and time of possession (18 minutes, 46 seconds).

Ray's presence has forced opposing defensive co-ordinators to gameplan pressure schemes aimed at hurrying him and making him feel uncomfortable. Despite having thrown 181 passes, Ray has only been sacked eight times.

With Ray in tow, Toronto leads the CFL in time of possession (over 31 minutes per game) and is second in total offence and passing yards. With the Argos being able to sustain drives and limit turnovers, that has taken a lot of pressure off the defence and special teams to come up with big plays.

Yet both have thrived this year as Toronto's defence — under new co-ordinator Chris Jones — is allowing the second-fewest yards and special-teams dynamo Chad Owens has amassed a league-leading 1,291 all-purpose yards.

Owens has also flourished offensively with Ray, having registered 28 catches for 392 yards and three touchdowns, the latter two both team highs. And the three TD catches are significant considering Owens didn't have a touchdown reception at all last year.

If there has been a knock against Ray and Co., it has been an inability to cap more drives with touchdowns. Toronto is ranked sixth in TDs scored (11) but has booted a league-high 16 field goals.

Ray and the Argos will face a stiff test Monday when they host the Grey Cup-champion B.C. Lions. Montreal visits Winnipeg on Friday night in the only other league game.

Some other musings heading into this week's action:

- Toronto's 23-20 road win over Montreal on Friday was the second-most watched sports event in Canada behind coverage of the London Summer Games opening ceremony.

The Toronto-Montreal contest drew 874,000 viewers on TSN and RDS. A whopping 6.4 million viewers through the Consortium Network took in the spectacle that was the Olympics' opening ceremony but the football game was the most-watched CFL contest so far this season.

- The CFL might be a passing league but there's little difference between the league's top rusher and receiver. Toronto's Cory Boyd has run for a league-best 424 yards on 74 carries while Calgary's Nik Lewis is tops among receivers with 38 catches for 444 yards. Saskatchewan's Kory Sheets has scored a league-high six rushing TDs while Lewis leads receivers with six touchdown grabs.

- Parity is indeed live and well in the CFL with five teams tied for the best overall record at 3-2. Half of the 20 games played to date have been decided by four or fewer points with the winning margin in nine being by three or fewer points. West Division clubs do sport a 6-4 mark in head-to-head contests with their Eastern brethren.

- Seven kick-return touchdowns have been scored so far, one less than all of last season. Four have come on punt returns with the other three being missed field goals taken back for TDs. Hamilton's Chris Williams has three return touchdowns — two on punts, the other on a missed field goal.

- Hamilton rookie punter Josh Bartel is adjusting well to Canadian football. The native Australian and former Australian Rules Football star has a respectable 43.3-yard average. And he's earned it, having punted a league-high 39 times.

THIS 'N THAT: B.C. has yet to lose a fumble this season . . . Calgary tailback Jon Cornish is averaging just 3.8 yards per carry this season. He posted a 7.3-yard average in 2011. Also last year, Montreal's Jamel Richardson was the CFL's leading receiver with 112 catches for 1,777 yards and 11 TDs. So far in 2012, Richardson has 22 receptions for 300 yards and no touchdowns . . . Hamilton quarterback Henry Burris has thrown four touchdown passes in three of his last four games and has a league-best 15 TD strikes.

{allcanada} NHL PITCHES NEW REVENUE SHARING; "AMPLE TIME" FOR DEAL

Match.ca

NEW YORK -- NHL players and their union began examining the league's proposed expansion of revenue sharing as labour talks continued Tuesday.

NHLPA executive director Don Fehr says he can't make a counterproposal on the league's full package until his group receives and examines the requested team financial reports. The first batch -- 76,000 pages -- arrived late Monday night.

The meetings will continue Wednesday at the league offices in New York. More talks are scheduled next week when Fehr returns from a meeting with NHL players in Russia.

Fehr says players are "not enamoured" with proposed limitations on contract lengths and a clause that would force them to wait longer before becoming unrestricted free agents.

Commissioner Gary Bettman says "ample time" remains to make a deal before the current CBA expires Sept. 15.

{allcanada} Toronto Film Fest adds 70+ docs, midnight movies, new works

Match.ca

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Toronto International Film Festival announced more than 70 additions to its programming on Tuesday, including new documentaries from Ken Burns, Julien Temple and Alex Gibney, a black comedy from Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh and a number of films from Mumbai.

The new additions to the September 6-16 festival comprise its TIFF Docs, City to City, Midnight Madness, Vanguard, TIFF Cinematheque and TIFF Kids programs.

They join the 60 premieres, gala screenings and special presentations that were announced last week.

The TIFF documentary lineup, typically a strong part of the festival program, will include "The Central Park Five," an examination of the case in which five black and Latino teens were wrongly convicted of raping a jogger in New York's Central Park, from Ken Burns, David McMahon and Sarah Burns; "London - The Modern Babylon," which TIFF describes as an "epic time-traveling voyage" to the heart of the city, from "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle" director Julien Temple; and "Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God," Oscar-winner Alex Gibney's look at abuse and cover-ups in the Catholic Church.

Other documentaries will cover death squads ("The Act of Killing"), Israel's secret service ("The Gatekeepers"), disco music ("The Secret Disco Revolution") and the war on drugs ("How to Make Money Selling Drugs").

The Midnight Madness program, which focuses on action films, horror movies and black comedies, will feature 10 films, including new work from playwright and "In Bruges" director Martin McDonagh ("Seven Psychopaths"), " "Rain Man" director Barry Levinson ("The Bay") and rocker/director Rob Zombie ("The Lords of Salem").

Vanguard, 14 films curated by one of the Midnight Madness programmers, includes Michel Gondry's "The We and the I," Ben Wheatley's "Sightseers," British musician Ben Drew's directorial debut "iLL Manors" and Rodney Ascher's "Room 237," which delves into theories that have sprung up around Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining."

The City to City program, which spotlights films from a different foreign city each year, will feature 10 films from Mumbai. The selection, which includes Anurag Kashyap's two-part gangster epic "Gangs of Wasseypur," focuses on independent films that contrast with the bright commercialism of India's Bollywood movies, according to TIFF Artistic Director Cameron Bailey.

"Mumbai's cinema today is entirely different from what it was even a few years ago," said Bailey in a release announcing the lineup. "The rise of independent cinema has shifted the terrain, probing into previously taboo subjects and adopted styles that were earlier unpalatable to the Indian audience."

TIFF Cinematheque is a program that screens both Canadian and international cinema; the section is screening as part of the festival for the first time, though TIFF has been mounting it at other times for 22 years.

This year's lineup includes Alfred Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder," Roman Polanski's "Tess" and the little-seen anthology film "Loin du Vietnam," an "agit-prop classic" featuring sequences from such acclaimed directors as Claude Lelouch, Agnes Varda, Jean-Luc Godard and Alain Resnais.

The TIFF Kids section, which consists of four films, will include world premieres of Sony Pictures Animation's "Hotel Transylvania" and the new 3D version of Andrew Stanton's and Lee Unkrich's Pixar classic "Finding Nemo."

{allcanada} BLUE JAYS LOOK TO SNAP MARINERS' WIN STREAK

Match.ca

A day after making two trades, the Toronto Blue Jays look to snap their two game losing skid when they face the Seattle Mariners, who have won their last five games.

Toronto has dropped two in a row since a three-game winning streak and lost for the fourth time in seven tries on Monday.

Ricky Romero lost his seventh straight start and gave up four runs -- three earned -- in six innings. He has received only one run of support over his losing streak. Rajai Davis homered off Iwakuma to account for Toronto's scoring.

"He was outstanding after the leadoff home run by Davis," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said about Iwakuma. "He dominated us after the first hitter of the game."

The Blue Jays made a few moves Monday by placing designated hitter Adam Lind on the 15-day disabled list and trading left fielder Travis Snider to Pittsburgh for pitcher Brad Lincoln. Thames, of course, switched clubhouses when the Mariners acquired him for Delabar.

Taking the mound for Toronto this evening will be Aaron Laffey. Laffey is 2-0 in his last three appearances and did not factor in the outcome of a 10-4 win over Oakland on Thursday, as he was reached for four runs in 5 2/3 frames. He is 2-1 on the season with a 3.22 ERA in 10 games (6 starts).

Meanwhile the Seattle Mariners not only keep winning, but they're also still dealing before the trade deadline.

The Mariners sent fan favorite Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees last week, then traded reliever Brandon League to the Los Angeles Dodgers after last night's win for two minor league players. Seattle also sent relief pitcher Steve Delabar to the visiting Blue Jays for outfielder Eric Thames.

Seattle may also deal starting pitcher Jason Vargas before today's deadline and he's scheduled to throw this evening. Vargas has won four straight starts and brings an 11-7 record in 22 starts into Tuesday's affair along with a 3.76 earned run average. He is coming off eight innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 win over Kansas City on Thursday.

Vargas, a left-hander, lost at Toronto back on April 29 in a 7-2 setback and pitched well in defeat, allowing two runs in six innings. Vargas hasn't fared so well in five career starts against the Jays, going 0-3 with a 6.49 ERA.

Hisashi Iwakuma didn't seem to have any trouble with Toronto in last night's 4-1 win and racked up 13 strikeouts through eight innings. He allowed one run and four hits with three walks, while Josh Kinney and Lucas Luetge both worked the ninth to keep the Blue Jays off the board. Luetge earned his first save.

"He was fantastic tonight," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said about Iwakuma. "We really needed him to step up. We were very short in the bullpen tonight and for him to go eight strong innings like he did and pitch the way he did against a very good hitting ballclub, just a great performance."

Michael Saunders and Kyle Seager each had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Mariners, who are 6-2 on a 10-game homestand.

Toronto won two of three meetings with Seattle at home from April 27-29 this season and is 8-3 in the past 11 matchups between the clubs.
