Found more about it... For the 5.1 mix which was to occur in LA, they used a prism interface to encode 20bit into 16 bit space on the DA-88s.  In mixing, the DA-88 tapes were varispeeded to match the picture and then digitally resampled to 44.1.  That seems to be the depth of the music and effects and dialogue.  However, they also flew in underscore, expanded from mono and stereo sources and stored on Sony 3348HR.  Then the final master is 24bit.  But that doen't change the fact that the music, dialogue and effects are from a final source of 16/44.1.  Here is the link...

On a related note...  Any word on the source of this 5.1 mix?  Same as the previous release, or new mix?  The last one was not mixed by Abby Road.  The stems were provided  on Tascam DA-88 tapes at 16/48 and remastered/restored/remixed from those (there is an interesting article about it online if you can find it).  They did a great job and I love the mixes, but if they are still being used, they only exist at 16/48.
