Re: [SurroundSound] Re: Best Universal Player With ISO Support

The Oppo 93/95 players with certain firmware installed, will play DVD-A, DVD-V and Blu-ray ISO files from an attached hard drive. They will not stream ISO's over a network.  This was an undocumented feature that was added through a firmware update, and then removed last January when certain studios, cough*FOX*cough, objected due to a supposed association of ISO's with piracy.  Evidently, the ability to play 3D Blu-ray ISO's is what really caused the consternation by the studios. Since the Oppo universal players are first and foremost disc players that must have Blu-ray licensing by the Blu-ray Disc Association, the threat by the studios forced Oppo to remove this undocumented feature in a firmware update.  Many owners of the Oppo 93/95 haven't updated their firmware to maintain the ability to play ISO's. Note, the Oppo's don't play SACD ISO's directly, they must be burned to a DVD-R disc, or they can be streamed using Foobar and the SACD plug-in, or the DSF/DFF files converted to FLAC. The Oppo 93/95 players can play many other types of digital media files that previous Oppo models can't, but it's ISO playback that make it unique for a universal disc player.

The Dune is a different animal altogether, in that it is primarily a media streamer. It will stream ISO's over a network, although evidently not 3D Blu-ray or DVD-A ISO's.  However, the Dune, Popcorn Hour, and other networked media streamers will stream Blu-ray and DVD-V ISO's.

Can I ask a really dumb question to the group, namely what do you mean by 'ISO playback'?

I assume you mean a .ISO file that has the been burnt using ImgBurn or similar to create a DVD-Audio or SACD-R?

I'm confused because to me 'ISO-playback' can mean:

(i)                 burning an ISO image to disc as above

(ii)               playing a .ISO file from a data disc

(iii)             playing a .ISO file over a network

(iv)              playing an ISO file structure over a network i.e. the contents of an \AUDIO_TS folder in the case of a DVD-Audio or \VIDEO_TS in the case of a DVD-Video.

A few years ago I tried all these with limited success with Oppo DV-980H, Helios X-5000, Xbox 360 and another 100BaseT/Wi-Fi enabled DVD player I can't even recall the name of. All fell down at multiple points in the GUI when trying to access 10,000+ songs from network storage. I recall the Xbox giving a single alphabetical list of either 1,000 albums or maybe even 10,000 tracks. Unusable either way. I would always end up listening to the 'A's….

The only one I still have is the Oppo DV-980H. This plays commercial SACD and DVD-Audio as well as ones I have burnt myself. Obviously it has no Blu-Ray playback. It could be a very cheap option to get one of these second-hand for SACD-R playback.

I don't own one, but I've been told the Dune doesn't play DVD-A ISO's (i.e. there's no MLP decoder). If that's true, it's a huge disadvantage vs. an Oppo 93/95 with firmware that still has ISO playback.

There is rumored to be a firmware hack that will restore ISO playback on an Oppo that has been updated with new firmware. I haven't investigated since my Oppo still plays ISO's.

There was a player called the Dune (i think) that was able to do most disc formats and iso's.  I don't know what their current situation is but you may google that and see if it is another option.

AFAIK, you cannot downgrade to previous firmware version.
However, another thing you can try -
I bought the Nuforce edition of the oppo bdp93 (slightly upgraded),
just as the new firmware was released, and it didnt have the previous
version but even an earlier one-
So my guess is the Nuforce stock is slightly older as it undergoes
other upgrades,
Chances are you can get a new Nuforce with the older firmware
(you can ask before you buy, this is what I did)
