Re: [SurroundSound] Abridged summary of surroundsound@googlegroups.com - 5 Messages in 3 Topics

Comparing a well-equipped HTPC running software such as J. River, Winamp, Foobar, and PDVD with an Oppo is certainly a worthwhile comparison. Purchase cost, features, reliability, ease of use, build quality, longevity, quality of DAC's, cost of maintenance & software upgrades, fan noise, resale value, and customer support are just some of the factors I can think of that may tilt one versus the other.

I wouldn't suggest the Oppo wins out on all of those factors. In fact, an HTPC can be built that is more versatile than an Oppo, but I would suggest that the HTPC will be much more expensive than the Oppo when you consider all of the costs that make a top-notch HTPC. That's not to say that a cheap laptop can't be used, but I'll take my Oppo over just about any cheap laptop or pc with a $50 soundcard.

My Oppo fits very nicely into my home theater system for music and movies, for both disc and digital playback. With a universal remote control, it works reliably, and is easy to use with a few button presses of the remote. Video quality for Blu-ray and DVD upconversion is among the best. Fan noise is non-existent. DAC's are top-notch. If I want to sell my Oppo, I know I'll get top dollar for it.  That was enough to retire my HTPC.

As usual, Det. Columbo <g> is correct.  The Oppo 93/95 players did a marvelous job of playing back ISO files.  I find this the most convenient way for me to store my surround sound music on my hard disc.  Not only can my Oppo play back these files seamlessly, but it also allows me to quickly create a burned copy ready to be played by *any* DVD/DVD-Audio/Blu-ray player by simply dragging and dropping the ISO file onto ImgBurn.

For these reasons, I have refused to update my BDP-93 with the newer firmware.  And, keep in mind, once you update an Oppo with the newer firmware, you *cannot* go back to an older version.  I am seriously considering buying another unit to keep in storage in the event my current one goes down...
