Agree with you on this one. Speakers and room acoustics make the biggest impact on what you hear, and upgrades to either or both will give you the most bang for your buck. Now if the Denon is truly the weak link (which I don't know), then by all means you should upgrade it also, but don't neglect the two factors that can make the biggest difference. I assume your Denon has some type of Audyssey room correction, but some relatively inexpensive room treatment can also make a big difference.

Separate preamp/amp are not likely to improve what you hear (beyond
