Emmy season is in full swing! Voters will be checking off names and shows this week they think are worthy of getting a nomination come July 19. We at TVGuide.com have a few selections in mind ourselves. Next up: our dream ballot for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Claire Danes, Homeland
Stranger things have happened (like Homeland getting completely snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild Awards), but we'll put big money on Danes not only getting nominated, but winning it all. Her complex, layered turn as the bipolar and ruthless Carrie Mathison was nothing short of a force of nature. We love it as much as she loves jazz.
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey
As Downton Abbey jumps from the miniseries race to drama, Dockery, who was not nominated last year, is shifting from supporting to lead. It's a sound move after Dockery brilliantly brought corseted scheming to new heights all the while entertaining us with her up-and-down romance with Matthew. She'll face off against her on-screen mom Elizabeth McGovern for a nod. Is there enough room for both of them?
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Just as she had a go-to episode submission last year with "The Suitcase," Moss, a three-time nominee, has one again this year with "The Other Woman," in which Peggy draws up the courage to tell Don that she's leaving Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. It's a flawlessly calibrated performance by Moss, capturing Peggy's understandable nerves but firm resolve, especially after Don refuses to let go of her hand — which Moss was unaware Jon Hamm was going to do.
Jessica Paré, Mad Men
Regardless of what you think of Megan, you have to give props to Paré for fearlessly diving in into an established hit and creating one of the most curious characters who has ever stepped inside SCDP — one who also has some inexplicable power over Don. Plus, was there a more talked-about moment this year than her "Zou Bisou Bisou" serenade?
Katey Sagal, Sons of Anarchy
Sagal is Sons' best chance at a nomination and yet it remains a longshot. Egregiously snubbed throughout Sons' run, Sagal produced even more inspired work this year as she conspired to kill Clay (following one of the most intense fights ever). At this point, we're not sure what it will take for Emmy to notice.
Madeleine Stowe, Revenge
There is nothing more fun than watching an actor having the time of their life playing a role, and such is the case with Stowe. Between Victoria Grayson's soul-piercing stares and general fabulous bitchiness, Stowe has made cheering for Emily Thorne very difficult. She's already nabbed a Golden Globe nod, so why not an Emmy one too?
