ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Former Blue Jays catcher Jose Molina has agreed to a US$1.8-million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.
He hit a career-best .281 with three homers and 15 RBIs in 55 games last season with Toronto.
Molina gets a $1.5-million salary for next season under Monday's agreement, and the Rays hold a $1.8-million option for 2013 with a $300,000 buyout.
He is keeping up his tour of the AL East following stints with the New York Yankees (2007-09) and Blue Jays (2010-11). He has thrown out 62 of 170 runners attempting to steal in the last four seasons for an impressive 36.5 percentage.
The brother of Bengie and Yadier Molina, he also has played for the Chicago Cubs (1999) and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2001-07).
