{allcanada} Canadiens slip past Canes in shootout 4-3

RALEIGH, N.C (AP)—Brian Gionta (notes) scored the lone goal in the shootout to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-3 win over the Carolina on Wednesday night to snap the Hurricanes' two-game winning streak.

Carolina took a 2-0 first-period lead after Jiri Tlusty (notes) and Anthony Stewart (notes) tallied for the Hurricanes.

Tlusty's goal came 34 seconds into the game after his shot near the blue line glanced off the left post and skidded along the goal line behind Montreal goalie Carey Price (notes). The puck almost went all the way through, but Price fell backward and knocked the puck into his own net. Price finished with 30 saves for the Canadiens, who moved to 10-9-3 on the season.

Carolina built a 2-0 lead when Stewart connected a one-timer from the slot after getting a pass from behind the goal by Tim Brent (notes) at 6:00.

Montreal tied the game by getting a short-handed goal from Lars Eller (notes) at 9:06 of the second and then the Canadiens made it 2-2 when Michael Cammalleri (notes) tipped in a pass from Josh Gorges (notes) 27 seconds into the third period past Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward (notes), who had 31 saves.

Brandon Sutter's (notes) goal at 3:18 of the third gave Carolina a brief 3-2 lead, but Travis Moen (notes) evened the score again when picked up his 100th career point at 4:37 of the period.

NOTES: Montreal D Hal Gill (notes) returned to the lineup after missing the past five games with a leg infection. … With cousins Brandon and Brett Sutter (notes) picking up assists for Carolina, it marked the first time since March 3, 1994, that two Sutter teammates registered points when Brent had two and Rich got one for Chicago against Calgary. … Moen recorded his 100th point with his third-period goal for the Canadiens.
