KUUSAMO, Finland -- Toronto's Len Valjas finished a career-best fifth at a World Cup cross-country ski event Friday.
The result came in the 23-year-old's first World Cup classic sprint.
Last year, he finished 17th in his first World Cup skating sprint and he was ninth in his second race earlier this year.
Teodor Peterson of Sweden won the 1.4-kilometre event Friday for his first World Cup victory.
Peterson crossed the line in two minutes 50.7 seconds, beating Nikita Kriukov of Russia by 0.5 seconds. Oeystein Pettersen of Norway was 1.0 second back in third.
Valjas finished in 2:53.0. Alex Harvey of St.-Ferreol, Que.,was 24th.
Three-time Olympic champion Marit Bjoergen of Norway won the women's 1.2-kilometre race for the second year in a row. Leading from start to finish, she won in 2:50.1.
Charlotte Kalla of Sweden came second, 2.1 seconds behind, followed by Vibeke Skofterud of Noway, 3.9 seconds back.
Dasha Gaiazova of Banff, Alta., finished 14th and Chandra Crawford of Canmore, Alta., was 22nd.
The men's 10K and women's 5K classical races take place Saturday. The overall winners of the mini tour will be decided on Sunday with the men's 15K and women's 10K pursuit races.
