VANCOUVER -- Defensive back Jovon Johnson of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers captured the Gibson's Finest CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player award Thursday night.
Johnson received the honour in voting conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada and the CFL's eight head coaches.
Linebacker Jerrell Freeman of the Saskatchewan Roughriders was a finalist.
Johnson posted a CFL-high eight interceptions this season and returned two for touchdowns. He also added 55 tackles for the East Division champions and helped anchor a defence that allowed 301.1 yards per game and 223.1 yards passing, both league lows.
Johnson and the Bombers will cap their season facing the B.C. Lions in the Grey Cup on Sunday.
Freeman posted a CFL-high and career-best 103 tackles this season with Saskatchewan. He also had a team-leading five sacks and three interceptions.
