I don't think Grill mentions lossy conversion as something that will ruin one's listening experience.  I believe he is just educating so that we... who primarily archive... can choose the best option for our needs.  Those of us who are looking to maintain an exact archive that can be remade into a working clone of the original know to archive the ISO.  The rest is just a matter of choice.
