SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. -- The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds have hired Mike Stapleton as head coach.
Stapleton spent last season as assistant coach with the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch.
The 45-year-old succeeds former general manager Dave Torrie, who coached the Greyhounds on an interim basis until he was fired in March.
Stapleton previously worked as an assistant coach in Sault Ste. Marie from 2008 to 2010.
He spent 14 years in the NHL where he had 71 goals and 111 assists with Chicago, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Winnipeg-Phoenix, Atlanta, Vancouver and the New York Islanders.
The Greyhounds finished last in the Western Conference at 24-36-8 during the regular season.
