VANCOUVER -- Brazilian striker Camilo scored two goals in second-half stoppage time Saturday to rally the Vancouver Whitecaps to a dramatic 3-3 tie with Sporting Kansas City.
Atiba Harris also scored for the Whitecaps (1-1-1). Canadian striker Teal Bunbury had a pair for Kansas City (1-1-1), while Kai Kamara also scored.
First Camilo converted a pass from substitute Davide Chiumiento in the 92nd minute before heading home moments later to earn Vancouver an unlikely point at Empire Field.
Until Camilo's late heroics, Bunbury was the star of the game. The 21-year-old from Hamilton, Ont., holds dual Canadian and American citizenship and now has three goals in two games this season, despite being bothered by a sore elbow. He has decided to play for the U.S. senior men's national team, after playing for the Canadian under-17 and under-20 teams.
Bunbury's father, Alex, ranks among the Canadian national squad's all-time leaders in goals and games played. The younger Bunbury grew up in Prior Lake, Minn., after his father moved there to coach youth soccer.
Vancouver's top scorer Eric Hassli and K.C. counterpart Omar Bravo both sat out with one-game suspensions because of red cards.
As expected, Camilo took Hassli's spot in the lineup alongside Harris up front.
Jay Nolly returned to the Vancouver net after sitting out last weekend's loss in Philadelphia with a jammed shoulder. Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit did not dress due to a nagging groin injury that was aggravated while playing for the U.S. against Paraguay on Tuesday.
Camilo and Harris combined to create several chances as the Whitecaps controlled play in most of the first half and forced Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen to make four difficult saves.
However, Bunbury staked Kansas City to a 1-0 lead in first-half stoppage time. Nolly dove to stop Milos Stojcev. After the ensuing K.C. corner kick rebounded off a Whitecaps defender, Bunbury buried a shot behind a diving Nolly.
The late first-half goal gave the visitors new offensive life and they took the play to the Whitecaps early in the second half. In the 58th minute, Bunbury took a through ball from Stojcev before sidestepping Vancouver defender Alain Rochat a slotting home.
Five minutes later, Kamara put Kansas City up 3-0 after C.J. Sapong ran down a long ball on the flank and passed to Kamara in the 18-yard box. He beat a helpless Nolly with a low shot to the corner.
Harris narrowed Vancouver's deficit to 3-1 in the 73rd minute off a pass from substitute Nizar Khalfan.
Nielsen maintained the two-goal lead as he stopped a point-blank shot by Harris in the 80th minute before Camilo's heroics.
Notes: Kansas City plays its first 10 games on the road while its new stadium is completed. Sporting doesn't play at home until June 17 against San Jose. ... Kansas City defender Julio Cesar, who has played for Real Madrid, A.C. Milan and a number of other overseas clubs, started after being listed as questionable because of a leg laceration. ... Chiumiento subbed in despite being described by Vancouver coach Teitur Thordarson as "a big question mark" a day earlier.
