{allcanada} WHL: FROESE, REBELS TAKE 3-0 SERIES LEAD OVER OIL KINGS

 

EDMONTON -- Byron Froese scored twice as the Red Deer Rebels moved Edmonton to the brink of elimination from the Western Hockey League playoffs with a 3-1 win over the Oil Kings on Monday.

The Rebels lead the Eastern Conference quarter-final series 3-0 and can complete the sweep Thursday in Edmonton.

After a scoreless 40 minutes, T.J. Foster scored 1:45 into the third period to give the Oil Kings a 1-0 lead.

Froese scored a power-play goal at 10:19 to tie the game 1-1.

With time winding down in regulation, the Rebels put the game away with two quick goals.

Daulton Siwak scored at 18:08, then Froese added some insurance 20 seconds later.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two assists for Red Deer.

Darcy Kuemper made 27 saves for the Rebels while Laurent Brossoit stopped 25 shots for the Oil Kings.

Wheat Kings 6, Tigers 3

WINNIPEG -- Shayne Wiebe and Matt MacKay each had a goal and two assists as the Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers 6-3 in Western Hockey League playoff action Monday night.

The Wheat Kings took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarter-final, with Game 4 scheduled for Thursday in Winnipeg.

David Toews, Mark Stone, Brenden Walker and Hampus Gustafsson, with an empty-netter, also scored for the Wheat Kings, who are playing their home games in Winnipeg due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon.

Cole Grbavac replied with a goal and two assists for the Tigers, who also got markers from Jace Coyle and Alex Theriau.

Brandon netminder Liam Liston made 32 saves, while Deven Dubyk stopped 23 shots for Medicine Hat.
