WINDSOR, Ont. -- Windsor Spitfires head coach Bob Jones is under investigation by police in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., following a fight over the weekend.
Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel said in a release Thursday that Jones was confronted by five men in the street early Saturday morning following his team's 4-2 defeat of the Greyhounds.
Rychel says a fight ensued and the 41-year-old Jones was allegedly kicked, punched and had his Memorial Cup ring stolen.
Jones did not file a police complaint following the incident, Rychel said.
"I'm confident a thorough police investigation will reveal that five unruly, angry young men unexpectedly confronted Bob Jones while he waited for a taxicab to take him to his hotel room," the statement read. "All five men appeared to be under the influence of alcohol."
Sault Ste. Marie police declined to provide details of the investigation when reached by The Canadian Press Thursday night.
Jones, a Sault Ste. Marie native who played fives season with the Greyhounds, is in his first season as head coach with the Spitfires after spending three years as an assistant.
He has also worked as an assistant with the Sudbury Wolves, Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Brampton Battalion and the Greyhounds.
