Winger Justin Shugg scored a pair of first-period goals and added an assist to power the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors to a 6-1 victory over the Belleville Bulls in the Ontario Hockey League on Sunday afternoon.
The 19-year-old Shugg, a native of Niagara Falls, Ont, put the Majors in front 2-0 by the 12-minute mark of the first period as Mississauga, which has struggled in the last month, bounced back from a shocking 4-1 loss to the Bulls in Belleville on Saturday night.
"We've got the talent here," said Shugg, who raised his season goal total to 33. "It's just a mental thing. We need everybody to bring their best to the table when the game is on the line.
"We know we could play them (the Bulls) in the first round of the playoffs," added Shugg. "With the team we have, we should be beating them by a couple of goals every time, just by the way we're seeded."
The win, coupled with Brampton's victory over the Niagara IceDogs Sunday afternoon, gave the Majors an eight-point lead over the second-place IceDogs in the battle for top spot in the Eastern Conference standings. Mississauga and Niagara each have nine games remaining in the regular season.
Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Brampton 3 Niagara 0; Guelph 4 Kingston 2; Sudbury 6 Windsor 5 (OT); Owen Sound 4 Oshawa 3 (SO) and Sault Ste. Marie 5 Sarnia 2.
