CALGARY -- Newfoundland's Collin Thomas advanced to the men's semifinal at the Canadian junior curling championship Friday with a 7-5 victory over New Brunswick's Jon Rennie in a tiebreaker.
Thomas scored three in the third end and two in the fifth for a comfortable 6-1 lead going into the sixth.
Rennie made it close with a deuce in the ninth to make it 6-5. But New Brunswick couldn't remove a Newfoundland counter in the 10th with its last stone, making the final, 7-5, as Thomas didn't have to throw his last stone.
Both rinks came into the match with 8-4 records.
Thomas meets Ontario's Mat Camm in Sunday morning's semifinal, when they will compete for a chance to take on Saskatchewan's Braeden Moskowy later that evening in the final.
Moskowy completed his run of the table Thursday, beating Alberta 6-2 in the late draw to finish a perfect 12-0.
Camm finished second at 9-3.
On the women's side, Saskatchewan's Trish Paulsen will go against Breanne Meakin's Manitoba foursome in a semifinal Saturday. The winner meets local favourite Nadine Chyz.
