{allcanada} WHL: FERRARO LEADS SILVERTIPS TO WIN OVER AMERICANS

Landon Ferraro broke out of a massive goal-scoring drought, finding the net twice to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 3-2 victory over the Tri-City Americans on Friday night in Western Hockey League action.

Ferraro, Everett's captain, had gone 20 games without scoring. But he ended his drought when he scored on his own rebound late in the first period to open the scoring. His power-play goal midway through the third period proved the difference.

Clayton Cumiskey also scored for Everett (17-18-5), which was playing without leading scorer Tyler Maxwell for the second consecutive game because of illness.

Luke Siemens stopped 29 shots in goal for the Silvertips, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Brendan Shinnimin and Tyler Schmidt scored for Tri-City (23-12-2), which had a four-game winning streak come to an end. Drew Owsley stopped 36 shots in goal for the Americans.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Brandon 9 Calgary 2; Kamloops 5 Chilliwack 2; Kootenay 3 Moose Jaw 1; Saskatoon 5 Prince Albert 1; Vancouver 4 Prince George 3; Regina 2 Red Deer 1 (SO); Seattle 3 Kelowna 1; Spokane 6 Lethbridge 0 and Swift Current 5 Medicine Hat 0.

Wheat Kings 9 Hitmen 2

At Brandon, Man., Scott Glennie assisted on five goals to lead the Wheat Kings in a thrashing of Calgary.

Brenden Walker, Mark Stone, Shayne Wiebe and Mike Ferland each scored twice for Brandon (14-23-5), while Tyrel Seaman added a single.

Chase Clayton and Keaton Lubin both scored their first WHL goals for the Hitmen (12-27-3).

Blazers 5 Bruins 2

At Kamloops, B.C., Colin Smith had a hat trick as the Blazers handled Chilliwack.

Dylan Willick and Jordan DePape also scored for Kamloops (20-20-2).

Kevin Sundher and Steve Oursov replied for the Bruins (17-18-3).

Ice 3 Warriors 1

At Cranbrook, B.C., Kevin King scored the eventual game-winner with eight seconds left in the first period as Kootenay defeated Moose Jaw.

Luke Paulsen opened scoring for the Ice (27-11-3) on the power play. Matt Fraser had an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left to seal the Ice win.

Spencer Edwards notched his 19th of the year 8:31 into the second period for the Warriors (25-15-2).

Blades 5 Raiders 1

At Prince Albert, Sask., Darren Dietz scored the winner early in the second period as Saskatoon raced ahead of the Raiders.

Alex Elliott, Stefan Elliott, Jake Trask and Ryan Olsen also scored for the Blades (31-9-1).

Mark McNeill replied for Prince Albert (16-23-4) with 2:42 left in the game.

Giants 4 Cougars 3

At Prince George, B.C., Teal Burns had the winner as Vancouver edged the Cougars.

Brendan Rowinski, Mark Reners and Darren Bestland rounded out the attack for the Giants (19-17-5).

Both Brett Connolly and Sena Acolatse had a goal and an assist for Prince George (20-16-3), while Spencer Asuchak added a single.

Pats 2 Rebels 1 (SO)

At Red Deer, Alta., Shane Neigum scored the decisive shootout goal as Regina beat the Rebels.

Tanner Olstad notched the lone regulation-time goal for the Pats (14-20-6).

Byron Froese replied for Red Deer (25-12-5) during a third-period power play.

Thunderbirds 3 Rockets 1

At Kent, Wash., Travis Toomey opened the scoring as Seattle disposed of Kelowna.

Burke Gallimore's 20th goal of the season gave Seattle (17-15-7) a 2-0 win.

Geordie Wucrick's 21st of the season on a power play early in the third period cut that lead in half for the Rockets (21-19-0), before Marcel Noebels countered for the Thunderbirds with 10:05 left in regulation.

Chiefs 6 Hurricanes 0

At Spokane, Wash., James Reid made 21 saves as the Chiefs blanked Lethbridge.

Blake Gal, Dominik Uher and Kenton Miller all had a goal and an assist for Spokane (23-10-5), while Tyler Johnson, Mitch Holmberg and Anthony Bardaro added singles.

Brandon Anderson stopped 26 shots for the Hurricanes (13-18-8).

Broncos 5 Tigers 0

At Swift Current, Sask., the Broncos scored four goals during a 3:52 span in the second period on the way to a shut out of Medicine Hat.

Dillon Wagner, Trevor Cameron, Andy Blanke struck for even strength goals 3:23 apart early in the period for Swift Current (22-22-1) and 29 seconds later Brad Hoban opened a 4-0 lead on the power play with his 14th of the season.

Kyle Verdino scored his third of the season during a third-period power play to help the Broncos finish the game 2-for-2 with the man advantage.

Goaltender Tyler Bunz yielded four goals on 21 shots for Medicine Hat (25-12-2). Deven Dubyk stopped two of three shots he faced during a 7:04 relief appearance.

Broncos overage goaltender Mark Friesen stopped all 20 shots he faced to post his third shutout of the season.
