The Niagara IceDogs have been without star goaltender Mark Visentin for nearly a month. Fortunately for them, Dalton McGrath has filled the void admirably.
McGrath made 20 stops for his first career Ontario Hockey League shutout as the IceDogs blanked the Belleville Bulls 3-0 on Thursday.
McGrath, acquired in a trade with the Barrie Colts last month, improved to 6-2 with Niagara while filling in for Visentin, who backstopped Canada to a silver medal at the world junior hockey championship. McGrath, a native of Brampton, Ont., is 14-3 in his OHL career.
Visentin is expected to get the start Sunday against fellow Canadian junior Erik Gubranson and the Kingston Frontenacs.
Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Ottawa 4 Peterborough 3; Barrie 6 Brampton 3; Plymouth 5 Windsor 4 (OT); Guelph 6 Oshawa 5 (SO); and Kitchener 3 Sarnia 2.
At St. Catharines, Ont., three NHL draft picks scored for Niagara. Jason Wilson (New York Rangers) with his 15th goal of the season, Freddie Hamilton (San Jose Sharks) with his 17th of the campaign on a power play, and Steven Shipley (Buffalo Sabres) with his 12th.
Malcolm Subban made 29 saves in the loss as Belleville went 0-for-5 on the power play. The Bulls have now lost four straight games to fall to 12-23-3 on the season.
Niagara finished the game 1-for-4 with the man-advantage and improved to 24-10-4 with the win.
