CALGARY -- Former Calgary Stampeder coach Jim Duncan has died at the age of 86.

The Stampeders said Duncan died Wednesday in North Carolina.

Duncan, from Reidsville, N.C., was head coach of the Stamps for five seasons from 1969 to 1973.

He guided the club to a Grey Cup title in 1971, when Calgary defeated Toronto 14-11. It was Calgary's first championship since 1948. Duncan also coached Calgary to the championship game in 1970 when they lost 23-10 to Montreal.

The Stampeders won 38 games under Duncan.

"He was a key figure in the history of our organization and he will be missed by all," Stampeder president Lyle Bauer said Thursday in a statement. "We wish his family well during this difficult time."

Duncan was named Calgary's 13th head coach in 1969 after spending four years as an assistant coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

After leaving the Stampeders, Duncan was hired by a group who wanted to bring a CFL team to London, Ont. He also worked in the front office of the World Football League's Portland Storm.

Duncan played defensive end for the NFL's New York Giants from 1950 to 1953.
