Brayden Schenn scored in the second period to give Team Canada a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes at the World Junior Hockey Championships gold-medal final in Buffalo, N.Y., on Wednesday.

Ryan Ellis and Carter Ashton had scored in the first period to give Canada a 2-0 lead, with Schenn providing the primary assist on Ellis's opening tally.

Ellis took a pass across the slot from teammate Schenn and converted the slapshot past Russian goalie Dmitri Shikin 4:50 into the opening period for the game's first goal.

Ashton scored with 14 seconds left in the first to give the Canadians a two-goal cushion heading into the middle frame.

Nearing the midway point of that period, Schenn scored a one-timer from Marcus Foligno to the increase the lead to three and chase Shikin from the Russian net in favour of goalie Igor Bobkov.

With 4:29 left in the second, Russia's Vladimir Tarasenko had to be helped to the bench after a Canadian player's skate struck him inadvertently in the side of the head as Tarasenko fell to the ice.
