The Toronto Argonauts have avoided another potential free agent hitting the open market.
Ronald Flemons, Toronto's most outstanding defensive player last season, was locked up to a three-year contract extension, shoring up one of the pivotal pieces to the Argos pass rush. Four of the team's defensive linemen were eligible to become unrestricted free agents on Feb. 15, but with Flemons returning, that leaves Kevin Huntley, Eric Taylor and Adriano Belli still unsigned.
Despite being a five-year veteran in the CFL, last season was Flemons' coming out party. The 31-year-old registered eight sacks and showed a nose for the football, recovering four fumbles. He infamously became a household name in Week 11 when he was returning a fumble in B.C. and bobbled the ball with nobody in sight just before the goal line.
Flemons was inked just before the end of the calendar year so that his signing bonus would count toward what was left of Toronto's 2010 salary cap, and not next season's.
Shannon Boatman, an American offensive tackle, also has an expiring contract.
