The Montreal Alouettes re-signed all-star linebacker Chip Cox and Canadian defensive tackle J.P. Bekasiak on Friday, locking down two players who were set to become free agents in February.
Cox signed a four-year deal with the Als while Bekasiak inked a three-year contract.
Vice-president and GM Jim Popp said he was happy the organization had been able to secure two key components of its success.
"These are a major re-signings for our club for the future. Chip has been an impact player for the Alouettes since he arrived in Montreal, but no bigger than he has been over the last two seasons since the switch to linebacker," Popp said. "Chip easily could have been named defensive player of the year both years."
The 5'9, 185-pound Cox is set to begin his sixth season with the team following an impressive performance last year. Cox tied for first in the league with four forced fumbles.
"In the 19 seasons that I have been in the CFL, the two defensive players that come to my mind that have been able to make those plays are Barron Miles and Chip Cox," Popp said.
Bekasiak, 29, played in 17 games in 2010 with Montreal, finishing with four sacks and 15 defensive tackles. He also had an interception and one sack in the East Division Final against the Argonauts.
