MEDICINE HAT, Alta. -- Olympic medallists got a rough ride at the Canada Cup of Curling on Sunday.
Glenn Howard beat 2010 gold medallist Kevin Martin 10-7 in the men's final, while Stefanie Lawton topped silver medallist Cheryl Bernard 7-3 to take the women's title.
Tied 7-7 after nine ends, Howard scored three in the 10th to avenge a 7-4 defeat to Martin in Saturday's Page playoff.
"We have played Glenn a lot in finals," said Martin, "we've won a lot lately against him. He deserved that one. They outplayed us."
Howard scored three in the second end to take a 3-1 lead and led 5-2 after five. Martin fought back with two in the sixth and another in the seventh to knot the score 5-5.
Howard restored his lead to 7-5 in the eighth but Martin came right back with two of his own in the ninth.
"The whole game was up and down," said Howard. "There were a lot of great shots made out there."
With the score tied 2-2 after five ends in the women's final, Lawton scored one in the sixth and three more in the seventh to lead 6-3.
"That was huge, when you were in such a tight game," said Bernard. "I think, if we could have kept the game close, we would have eventually got an end, where we were kind of making them chase us."
Bernard got one back in the eighth, but Lawton restored her advantage with another point in the ninth.
For Lawton, this marked the second time in three years she skipped a squad to the women's title at the Canada Cup.
"They both feel great," said Lawton, whose squad had a 7-1 record at the tournament. "This is a different team this year."
Howard's rink takes home $29,000 in total prize money, while Lawton's foursome won just over $28,000.
