Soon-to-be free agent slugger Manny Ramirez is a big enough supporter of new Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell, that he would be willing to sign with the club.
Ramirez made the comments to ESPNdeportes.com on Monday night after the Jays made Farrell's hiring official earlier in the day.
"John has tremendous knowledge of the game, a very pleasant man and he trains ballplayers," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com. "Toronto has made a great acquisition. Farrell is a manager for whom I would like to play, and Toronto is a team I've liked since they had all those Dominican players in the '80s."
Despite hitting .298, the 38-year old slugger had a down season, as he hit just nine home runs and 42 RBI. He was limited to only 265 at-bats with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox because of knee and groin issues.
Ramirez has had surgery this off-season to repair the hernia in his left groin, and should be able to resume baseball activities by mid-November.
Ramirez, who has played 18 seasons in the major leagues, has a lifetime .313 average with 555 home runs and 1,830 runs batted in. Despite his age and injury history, Ramirez feels that he still can be productive in the right situation.
"I still have a lot of baseball left in me," Ramirez said. "I think that I can still bat if I keep myself healthy, and it is less probable to have an injury playing as the designated hitter."
Farrell and Ramirez were together with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 and 2008, before Manny was dealt to the Dodgers.
