TORONTO (AP)—Maple Leafs enforcer Colton Orr(notes) scored the winning goal after knocking over Florida goalie Scott Clemmensen(notes), and Toronto beat the Panthers 3-1 on Tuesday night.
The teams were locked in a tight-checking game until Orr netted the decisive goal with 8:58 left. After slamming into Clemmensen, Orr tipped a shot from linemate Tim Brent(notes) into the wide open net. Clemmensen argued his case with the referee to no avail.
Tyler Bozak(notes) and Phil Kessel(notes) also scored for the Maple Leafs (5-2-1).
Dennis Wideman(notes) had the lone goal for Florida (3-4).
The Panthers gave Clemmensen his first start of the season—making it four games in a row in which Toronto faced a backup goalie.
Bozak acknowledged being frustrated with his lack of scoring after Monday's practice. The relief was evident when he made it 1-0 with 41.9 seconds left in the first period. Bozak fired home a loose puck after Nikolai Kulemin(notes) shoveled it in front.
The Panthers don't boast a lineup littered with big names, but they showed a willingness to fight hard.
It paid off with a couple of power-play opportunities in the second period, one of which produced the tying goal. Maple Leafs goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere(notes) wasn't able to get set with traffic in front before Wideman scored from the point with a wrist shot at 14:27.
Kulemin had a glorious chance to restore Toronto's lead just before the second period ended, but Clemmensen got his arm on a quick shot from the Russian winger.
Orr gave Toronto a 2-1 lead, and Kessel pushed the advantage to two goals with his seventh of the season with 2:24 left. Kessel has scored in 11 of 14 games, dating to the preseason.
Notes: Leafs forward Colby Armstrong(notes) left the game after one shift with an undisclosed upper body injury. … John Mitchell(notes) and Carl Gunnarsson(notes) were replaced in the Toronto lineup by Mike Zigomanis(notes) and Brett Lebda(notes). … RW Radek Dvorak(notes) played in his 567th game with the Panthers, tying him with Olli Jokinen(notes) for second on the team's list—seven behind Robert Svehla. … Florida C Shawn Matthias(notes) missed a second straight game because of a sore foot.
