Ryan Strome moved into a tie for the scoring lead in the Ontario Hockey League with two goals as the Niagara IceDogs beat the Plymouth Whalers 5-2 in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday.
Strome, a second-year forward for the IceDogs, scored his seventh and eighth goals to give him 24 points on the season as Niagara improved to 9-4-1.
Strome's first goal was particularly impressive. He undressed Plymouth defenceman and team captain Beau Schmitz, then stickhandled puck just inside the post past Whalers goalie and New Jersey Devils draft pick Scott Wedgewood.
The game was a defensive struggle early on with Niagara leading 1-0 after 40 minutes before the teams combined for six goals in the third period.
Elsewhere in the OHL it was: Windsor 4 Sault Ste. Marie 2; Barrie 8 Kitchener 2; and Peterborough 3 Oshawa 2 (OT).
At St. Catharines, Ont., Alex Friesen, Jason Wilson and David Pacan also scored for the IceDogs, while Robbie Czarnik and Tyler Brown scored for Plymouth (5-7-2).
Mark Visentin made 34 stops for Niagara, while Wedgewood made 31 saves for Plymouth.
