Following a loss to Tom Lawlor at UFC 121 Saturday, one-time No. 1 middleweight contender Patrick (The Predator) Cote has been cut by the organization.
It was the Rimouski, Que., native's third straight loss in the Octagon.
"I had a little hope but finally got the release word from the UFC," Cote posted on his Twitter account Wednesday. "Its been a awesome experience ! I ll be back !!"
Cote (13-7, 4-7 in UFC) earned a shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva's belt in 2008 when he defeated Ricardo Almeida for his fourth consecutive UFC win (and fifth overall).
After undergoing major knee surgery, Cote returned to the cage in May after 18-plus months off but lost to Alan Belcher by second-round submission at UFC 113 in Montreal. The 30-year-old Cote fared well in the bout but fell victim to a rear naked choke shortly after Belcher was able to lift and faceplant him to the canvas, which was close to an illegal spike but ruled okay by the referee.
His release was not unexpected after the weekend fight in Anaheim. Cote was dominated for three rounds by Lawlor in a fight in which he was taken to the mat at will and even outstruck by the American wrestler. Lawlor was 5-for-6 on takedown attempts and connected on 49 of 75 significant strikes, compared to 6 of 22 for Cote, according to FightMetric.com.
