The long-awaited milestone is right around the corner.
Calgary Flames pivot Craig Conroy(notes), according to the decider, will suit up Thursday for his 1,000th game in the National Hockey League, a home date against the Colorado Avalanche.
"Hey, Connie's done his job for us," stated coach Brent Sutter. "How he's playing … is what I expect out of Connie. His role is his role, and he's accepted it. He's playing within it.
"I certainly don't expect to see Connie out of the lineup in the next couple nights."
Many in the city thought his drive for that 1,000 would stall this winter. Meaning he'd never get there.
And here it is, upon him before Halloween.
At home yet.
"That would be nice, for sure—I'd be lying to say it wasn't," said Conroy, 39, who'll work on the fourth unit, with Tim Jackman(notes) and Stefan Meyer(notes), tonight against the visiting Edmonton Oilers. "It's probably right in the front (of my mind). To play 1,000 games in the NHL would be huge. I'm only two away. I'm just looking forward to getting the opportunity."
Conroy, meanwhile, is tickled to have two goals to his credit already. Last season, it took him till Dec. 30—a deathly span of 36 games—to record even one.
"It's good to score," said Conroy, "but it's also a good atmosphere to win around here."
Moss Skates
David Moss(notes) skated with the team Monday morning—for the first time since being injured in a pre-season tilt in Edmonton.
"I feel good," says Moss. "The shoulder feels 100 per cent. It's just a matter of getting my legs back."
The veteran forward, who has been cleared for contact, will be available to return soon. "Probably later this week, hopefully," said Moss.
Sutter declined to say whether he plans to continue the Moss-at-centre experiment.
"Let's see," he said. "I'm not going to comment on that right now because he is getting closer every day. When that time comes, a decision will be made."
Left-winger Ales Kotalik(notes) (knee) isn't skating yet—but he wasn't wearing a brace on his leg Monday.
Nash Fined
Columbus Blue Jackets star Rick Nash(notes) was fined $2,500 for clunking Mark Giordano(notes) in the head with his stick Friday.
The Flames defenceman applauded the league's action.
"I thought it was pretty dirty at the time, but, obviously, the ref didn't think it was that bad—they gave him a two-minute penalty," said Giordano. "So I think it's good. They've got to crack down on that sort of stuff, so I guess it's a good thing. Any time a guy cross-checks someone up high or in the head like that, it's definitely something they should look at. But it's over and done with now. We'll move on from there."
C-Notes: Chilliwack RW Ryan Howse, a third-round draft pick of the Flames, has exploded for 14 goals in 10 WHL games—including a recent hat trick in a franchise-record 58 seconds (power-play strikes at 7:59, 8:38, 8:57 of the first period) against Vancouver. Howse missed most of Calgary's rookie camp because of a knee injury.
