{allcanada} LIONS ACQUIRE OL NEWMAN FROM STAMPEDERS FOR DRAFT PICKS

The Calgary Stampeders made it official Saturday as they shipped offensive lineman Jesse Newman to the B.C. Lions in exchange for a 2011 second round pick and a future conditional pick.

The conditional pick is believed to be a fourth round pick that is contingent on the Lions ability to re-sign Newman when his current contract expires at the end of the season.

The deal completes a strange season for Newman who abruptly announced his retirement prior to the beginning of the season.  The Powell River, BC native then changed his mind and returned to the Stampeders following the team's bye week, however he was not welcomed back to the team with open arms as he had hoped.  The most vocal being receiver Nik Lewis who was furious with Newman for abandoning the team only to rejoin them when he realized they had an excellent shot at the Grey Cup.

"No comment. I don't like Jesse," Lewis told reporters last week.  "I'm not going to talk about somebody who has retired and come out of retirement. I will talk about people who have been here and put in the work. I won't talk about anybody else."

The timing of the deal works out well for the Lions who lost centre Dean Valli, possibly for the season, to a broken leg during Friday's victory over Montreal.
