Canadian Hockey League Rookie of the Year Matt Puempel is one of 22 players named by Hockey Canada to represent the country at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, to be held Aug. 9-14 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Puempel, a left wing for the Peterborough Petes, led all first-year Ontario Hockey League players last season with 33 goals and 64 points, and is a top prospect for the 2011 Entry Draft.
Of the 22 players picked for the team, 21 are eligible for the 2011 draft. The only exception is Everett Silvertips defenseman Ryan Murray, who is eligible for the 2012 draft. He had 27 points and a plus-33 rating in 52 games last season.
"It was a very competitive camp, and choosing these 22 players was by no means an easy task," said Canada coach George Burnett, who also coaches the OHL's Belleville Bulls. "All of the players named today have earned their spot on the roster, and we look forward to getting to Europe and defending Canada's gold medal."
Canada is the defending champion and has won the gold five times in the last six years. They open play Aug. 9 against Sweden, and also play Slovakia and Switzerland in Group B play. The U.S., Czech Republic, Finland and Russia are in Group A.
