TORONTO -- Quarterback Anthony Calvillo, who guided the Montreal Alouettes to a 4-1 record in July, is the unanimous selection as the CFL's offensive player of the month.
Calvillo, the CFL's outstanding player the last two years, led the league in both passing yards and completion percentage for the month. He completed 69.9 per cent of his passes for 1,606 yards and 10 touchdowns, while throwing only two interceptions.
Calvillo, a 17-year veteran, is currently second on the all-time list for career passing yards (64,928) and TD strikes (364), trailing only Damon Allen in both categories.
Montreal end John Bowman was also a unanimous selection for defensive player honours. Bowman finished tied for the league lead in sacks (six) and first in forced fumbles (four).
Hamilton kick-returner Marcus Thigpen was named the top special-teams player. Thigpen is currently second in the league for combined yards with 846 over five games and is tied for second in the CFL with four TDs, having scored them four different ways (kickoff return, punt return missed field goal return and receiving).
Calgary rookie kicker Rob Maver was also considered for the honour.
Saskatchewan Roughriders slotback Andy Fantuz was named the top Canadian. The native of Chatham, Ont., had 25 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns in helping stake the Riders to a 4-1 record.
Toronto Argonauts linebacker Kevin Eiben was a finalist.
