But no one said anything about nerves.
A little bit of the jitters never hurt anybody, though, and Ryan Reynolds— the guy who will play the Green Lantern in next year's comic-book movie — is starting to embrace that energy.
"Stepping out at Comic-Con in front of 6,500 people is not a settling experience. But I try not to live in fear. Nerves are a nice thing — they let you know you're alive," says Reynolds, who was on hand at the epic pop-culture event this weekend as Warner Bros. premiered footage in the vast Hall H auditorium. The movie, which also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong, is scheduled for release June 17.
There have been Green Lanterns of all races, genders and alien species since the first, Alan Scott, made his debut in DC Comics in 1940. The most popular over the years has proven to be Hal Jordan, the test pilot turned space cop with the spiffy green power ring, emerald mask and amazing willpower who appeared in the late '50s.
That's who Reynolds plays in the movie: a confident-on-the-surface kind of guy who is still dealing with a lot of difficult stuff in his life when he's tapped to be the first human member of the cosmic Green Lantern Corps. Jordan is given a ring powered by his imagination.
Though all the outer-space stuff is cool, there is a lot of drama, from the fellow Lanterns who are wary of Jordan's presence to the fight with his own demons.
"Anytime you're dealing with a guy who has something unbelievable and insurmountable to overcome, it makes for a pretty interesting story," Reynolds explains. "As an actor, it's an interesting and excellent thing for me to get an opportunity to play. He's a bit of a fractured human being. He has watched his father die, and we move on to find him a little bit later in life, and he's kind of arrogant, cocky and aimless. It's this extraordinary power that's bestowed upon him that sets him upon a humbler path."
Though not in costume at Comic-Con, Reynolds looked superheroically buff and was never far from a power ring he carried around. But back on the New Orleans set of Green Lantern, the actor often is poured into a tight motion-capture suit.
"They've managed to find a material that most would agree is the most aggravating substance on Earth," Reynolds says. "We're shooting in Louisiana, which is pretty close to the sun in terms of the hottest place you can find anywhere around."
The actor has been embraced by fans so far. The goodwill only increased during the Comic-Con panel when Reynolds recited the Green Lantern oath to an excited little boy. He was also able to field obscure comic-book questions from grown-ups wearing Green Lantern T-shirts and plastic rings on all their fingers. His secret? "Artful deflection," Reynolds says, smiling.
