ST. EUSTACHE, Quebec -- DJ Kennington waited until the last minute, but came away with the big prize. Kennington passed Scott Steckly on the final lap of the Lucas Oil National 250 - just moments after Steckly had taken the lead away from Kerry Micks - and picked up the victory Saturday at Autodrome St. Eustache.
It was Kennington's second win in three NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 races this season. Kennington's sixth career win came in drastically different fashion than his dominating win at Delaware (Ont.) Speedway on June 5. The win also allowed Kennington to take the points lead away from JR Fitzpatrick, who finished eighth. Kennington now leads by 18 over Fitzpatrick.
Micks won the pole position earlier in the day and overcame an early-race rough-driving penalty. He passed Kennington for second on Lap 231 and Steckly for the lead on Lap 240. But as they approached the white flag, Micks got sideways and lost several spots.
On the final lap, Kennington dove past Steckly to steal away the victory.
Don Thompson Jr. finished third, followed by Jason Hathaway and Ron Beauchamp Jr. Micks wound up sixth. Anthony Simone, J.R. Fitzpatrick, Andrew Ranger, and Mark Dilley rounded out the top 10. Earlier in the day, Ranger won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race on the road-course in Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn., and managed to make it to Canada in time to take the green flag at Autodrome St. Eustache after missing practice and qualifying.
The Lucas Oil National 250 will air on TSN on Saturday, July 10 at 11:30 a.m. ET.
The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will next race Saturday, July 17 on the Streets of Toronto road-course.
