Montreal Canadiens president Pierre Boivin will step down in a year's time, turning over the reins to team co-owner Geoff Molson, the team has announced.
Molson will become president and chief executive of CH Group, the holding company that owns the team, the Bell Centre and events group Evenko on June 30, 2011, according to a statement released on Monday.
The plan will "ensure a smooth transition," the statement said.
Boivin will remain a member of the board of directors of the CH Group.
In the statement, Molson thanked Boivin for the work that he has done for the team over the past 11 years.
"Pierre undertook to transform the organization by modernizing it, developing fan passion and loyalty, particularly through the team's centennial celebrations, and creating value in all of our sports and entertainment operations," Molson said. "We have been able to count on his loyalty and unfailing support since we purchased the team."
Boivin underlined his attachment to the team.
"The confidence and unflagging support of our owners combined with the skills and commitment of all of our employees allowed our organization to achieve ever more ambitious goals," said Boivin.
The move comes after a season of unexpected success for the team, which made it all the way to the Eastern Conference final before being eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers.
Boivin, 56, was first named president of the team in 1999.
Prior to working with the Canadiens, Boivin was president and CEO of Canstar Sports Inc., a Montreal-based hockey equipment company that was later acquired by Nike.
Geoff Molson, along with his brothers Andrew and Justin, bought the Canadiens, as well as the Bell Centre from the previous owner, American businessman George Gillett, in June 2009.
