Re: [SurroundSound] Surround in the car

I don't use iTunes but i read on a forum I frequent:
"

Not my place to criticise, but I would suggest that .... members using iTunes V10 varieties think very carefully before upgrading to the all new – and very different – iTunes V11 (on OSX Lion, in my case).

I wish I had checked before upgrading, because the first thing about V11 you notice is that it totally fucks up the previous interface you've spent hours getting into shape. It's gone, gone, gone! Really gone!

It's genius to have an upgrade that neither warns you that it's carnage ahead, nor offers a "keep it like it was, stupid!" option, and best of all not to offer a "get me out of here, it stinks!" button to get you back nice and easy to where you were with iTunes V10.whatever….

But hey, it's probably not all bad! I'm pretty certain the integration with the iTunes Store is much tighter for those desperate for those 256kbps mp3s we just can't get enough of.

Hopefully a fix of sorts will emerge in time, so folks, don't just jump in with your eyes closed, or you'll bang your head, like me….."

Other views expressed there are:

"I upgraded, but luckily had saved my folder with the settings prior. Reverted back to 10.7"

And

"I upgraded to 11 on two Macs, one running Lion and the other Mt. Lion, both a little older. In fact they share the same networked library. I'm in iTunes everyday, arranging things I've downloaded from HRM, editing metadata, adding missing artwork and so on.

With some minor exceptions nothing about that has changed for me. Sidebar? Column browser? Got it back in those views where I wanted it. The only significant "view" missing is Album Artist view in the column browser — the one that showed albums sorta grouped by art. I never used that in normal use (it took up a more screen space) but was useful for discovering if some sorting tag was preventing all songs from showing up within the same album (or artist) as intended.

Mostly I'm enjoying the faster speed."

And

"Oddly enough, iTunes 10 has been the thorn in my side that 11 has painlessly pulled out. I love "play next." All in all, its excruciatingly simple to use. Unless you're using Windows, in which case stick with anything but iTunes, that is unless you really enjoy a good hernia, in which case stick with iTunes – I've got a great doctor to recommend to you."

and

"My main gripe was the album art, but I also had an issue with the sound. I know it should not cause any changes, but there was a loss of bass and fullness. When I went back to 10.7, it was back to normal."

and

"exactly. It takes a little poking around, but anyone looking to do so can get most of the old interface back if they want. I never use the freaking thing anyway, except for transferring their walled-garden data to my iPad. Apple – sucking more mainstream everyday. I think I liked'em better when they still had a bit of rebel in them, and actually cared about their few(er) geeky customers. Finding myself using Windows and Linux more and more… foobar2000 here we come!"

and

"As a Mac user since 1986 (that's right — '86) it's sad to see Apple become just like everything they once despised. Another shameful case of "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…" Apple no longer cares what their faithful customers want. iTunes 11 is designed to make it easier to BUY THINGS from Apple/iTunes, as well as try and keep you firmly within their closed system. Music, or your comfort and ease of use, simply aren't of any interest to them anymore."

and

"After getting used to the new (weird) layouts, my only gripes with 11 are that a) no artwork display in the sidebar means I can no longer export artwork for other uses with one drag and drop motion, and b) clicking on the selected track(s)' time and size in the status bar no longer changes the time format to an accurate (days:hours:)minutes:seconds display! Both these features have been useful to me in the recent past, and now I have to make do without them… :("

etc.......

I just thought I might flag up a caution for readers here.

You know why no one has taken i-Tunes out back to shoot it yet?

Because they're using Apple maps and they can't find the backyard.

Don't act on FUD like that without some specifics.

What "carefully made settings" are "destroyed" by iTunes 11?

All the same encoding and playback methods are there.  Music files do not get modified by upgrading.

The user interface changes quite a bit but can be set back to the old layout pretty easily if you wish.

Wish I would have known that before updating.  When i have time, I'm going back to 10.

You might like to NOT update iTunes to 11 as many people are complaining it destroys their carefully made settings.
