{allcanada} May 1: Beliveau becomes first Conn Smythe winner

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: May 1

1965: Jean Beliveau becomes the first winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Beliveau wins the brand-new trophy after scoring the first of the Montreal Canadiens' four first-period goals in a 4-0 win against the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 7 of the Final at the Forum.

Beliveau sets a record for the fastest Cup-winning goal when he beats Glenn Hall 14 seconds after the opening faceoff. He assists on a goal by Dick Duff less than five minutes later, and Yvan Cournoyer and Henri Richard score late in the period. Beliveau finishes the playoffs with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists). Gump Worsley makes 20 saves to become the second goaltender to have a shutout in Game 7 of the Final. The Canadiens win their first championship since 1960.

MORE MOMENTS

1980: The New York Islanders set a playoff record by winning their seventh consecutive road game when Bobby Nystrom scores at 1:20 of double overtime for a 2-1 win against the Buffalo Sabres at Memorial Auditorium in Game 2 of the Semifinals. Billy Smith makes 41 saves before Nystrom scores the third of his four career overtime goals to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series.

1992: For the first time in their history, the New York Rangers win a Game 7. Adam Graves scores two goals and sets up two others in an 8-4 victory against the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden in their Patrick Division Semifinal series. The Rangers also get two goals and an assist from Mark Messier and 33 saves by John Vanbiesbrouck. It's the first time the Rangers play a Game 7 at home after going 0-4 as the road team.

On the same night, Pat LaFontaine of the Sabres becomes the first player in NHL history to score a goal in each of his team's first seven playoff games in one year. Despite that, the Sabres lose 3-2 to the Boston Bruins at Boston Garden in Game 7 of the Adams Division Semifinal.

Also, Mario Lemieux has a goal and an assist for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 3-1 win against the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of their Patrick Division Semifinal at Landover, Maryland. The win caps Pittsburgh's comeback from a 3-1 series deficit.

1993: Nikolai Borschevsky scores at 2:35 of overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 of the Norris Division Semifinals at Joe Louis Arena. The Maple Leafs trail 2-1 and 3-2, but force overtime when Doug Gilmour scores with 2:43 remaining in the third period. Borschevsky then beats Tim Cheveldae to become the second player in NHL history to score his first playoff goal in overtime of a Game 7.

1995: The Canadiens are assured of a non-playoff season for the first time in 25 years when they lose 2-0 to the Sabres at Memorial Auditorium. Goaltender Dominik Hasek makes 32 saves and Richard Smehlik and Alexander Mogilny score goals to eliminate Montreal from the playoff race. It's the first time since 1970 that Montreal will not take part in the postseason.

2004: Joe Sakic ties Maurice Richard's career playoff record with his sixth overtime goal, giving the Colorado Avalanche a 2-1 win against the San Jose Sharks in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals at San Jose Arena. It's the second overtime goal in as many games for Sakic, who ties the game midway through the third period before scoring the winner at 1:54 of OT.

2008: Johan Franzen scores three goals in Detroit's 8-2 win against the Avalanche at Pepsi Center, giving him an NHL-record nine goals in a four-game series. Franzen also breaks the Red Wings record for goals in a series of any length, set by Gordie Howe in 1949 (eight goals in seven games). He matches Colorado's total goals in the Western Conference Quarterfinal series and becomes the first player with two hat tricks in a series since Jari Kurri of the Edmonton Oilers in 1985.

2009: The Red Wings make history in a 3-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Joe Louis Arena in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals. It's the 18th consecutive time the Red Wings have started a series at home, a playoff record. Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom has two assists before scoring the winning goal with 49.1 seconds remaining in the third period. Detroit also becomes the first NHL team to win consecutive games in one playoff year by scoring tiebreaking, game-winning goals in the last minute of the third period.

2018: Alex Ovechkin scores with 1:07 remaining in the third period to give the Capitals a 4-3 win against the Penguins in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Second Round at PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins trail 3-2 entering the third period, but Matt Niskanen ties the game by beating goalie Matt Murray at 5:06 before Ovechkin gets the winner.

{allcanada} Mikheyev confirms Maple Leafs, VGK interest

KHL winger Ilya Mikheyev confirmed Monday that he's being pursued by both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights.

Speaking at a team facility, the Omsk Avangard was asked directly about the two teams and confirmed their interest.

"Toronto or Vegas," Mikheyev said, per Russia's OM1 via Google Translate. "They are really interesting clubs and offers, but now I don't want to discuss them."

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger confirmed last week the Leafs and Golden Knights both had interest in the undrafted winger, adding that a majority of NHL teams had shown interest.

The 24-year-old posted 23 goals and 45 points in 62 games with Omsk Avangard this season and added four goals and 11 points in 13 playoff games.

Mikheyev has spent the past four seasons in the KHL with Avangard, posting 64 goals and 120 points in 224 games. He represented Russia at the world hockey championship last spring, posting three goals and one assist in eight games.

{allcanada} Report: KHL team acquires Ozhiganov's rights

Last week, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported there's a strong chance Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Igor Ozhiganov will return to the KHL next season after one year in North America.

Now, it appears the KHL is readying for his return.

According to Russian news outlet Sport-Express, Ak Bars Kazan acquired Ozhiganov's KHL rights from CSKA Moscow in exchange for former NHL forward Jiri Sekac. Sports-Express also adds that Ozhiganov plans to return to Russia this summer.

Ozhiganov joined the Maple Leafs last summer, signing a one-year, $925,000 contract after playing the previous eight seasons in the KHL.

He saw significant playing time early in the season but lost his full-time role once the team acquired Jake Muzzin in late January. He finished the regular season with three goals and seven points in 53 games and did not dress during the team's first-round playoff series.

The 26-year-old is scheduled to become a restricted free agent on July 1.

Sekac, who appeared in 108 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks and Arizona Coyotes, has spent the past three seasons with Ak Bars and posted a career-high 23 goals and 47 points this season.

{allcanada} Leonard shines again, Raptors fall to Butler and 76ers in Game 2

TORONTO — Kawhi Leonard couldn't do it alone. But he gave it a good try.

The Raptors star scored 20 of his 35 points in the second half on Monday after Toronto's worst first half of these playoffs, but he got little help from his teammates in an ugly 94-89 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series now heads to Philadelphia for Thursday's Game 3 tied at one game apiece. And the Raptors have to hope some of their other players can get going at what's sure to be a raucous Wells Fargo Center.

Pascal Siakam had 21 points for the Raptors, who overcame a 19-point deficit to make it a game down the stretch. Kyle Lowry had 20 points. The rest of the Raptors? Marc Gasol was the next highest scorer with five points.

"They came out more aggressive than us," Lowry said. "We didn't come out aggressive enough. We didn't come out with a super sense of urgency. And we didn't play well tonight. They played really desperate and super hard and they got a victory."

Coach Nick Nurse called his team's first half "stand-aroundish."

"Didn't start out very good with flow and rhythm and stuff," the coach said. "But we picked it up."

Jimmy Butler had 30 points and 11 rebounds to top the Sixers, while Joel Embiid, who was a game-time decision after battling the stomach flu, finished with 12 points.

It was no surprise the Sixers would come out a different team than the one the Raptors ran roughshod over in Game 1.

"That's normally the case from the team that goes down 0-1 or loses the last game," Nurse said pre-game. "I think that's always the thing you remember."

The Raptors clearly didn't remember. The Sixers threw different defensive looks at the Raptors, who were outscored in the first quarter for the first time this post-season and trailed by 19 points midway through the second.

"I thought our defence at the start of the game was almost as good as it could be," Sixers coach Brett Brown said.

In a first-half offence that moved like sludge, Leonard managed 15 points despite facing a swarm of Philly defenders. The rest shot a dismal 9-for-36 combined. The best three-point shooting team in the league hit just three of their 15 shots from behind the arc. And they were thoroughly outhustled, managing a woeful 13 rebounds to Philly's 33.

If there was a positive, it's that as terrible as Toronto was, the home team only trailed by 13 at the break.

"It was easy to just sit back and let the game go, but we fought hard and I'm just proud that we did that and I think it's good for us and we'll just go back, watch film and just get ready for Game 3," Siakam said.

How is it good?

"I think adversity is always good," he said. "We won Game 1, but at the same time we knew it wasn't going to be an easy series."

The Raptors found another gear in the third quarter. They outscored the Sixers 25-18, held them to 29 per cent shooting, including 0-for-11 from three-point range, and when Gasol connected on a pair of free throws with 2:50 left in the quarter, it capped a 17-8 Raptors run and sliced the deficit to just a point.

The Raptors went cold to start the fourth, missing all but one of their first seven shots, and when Ben Simmons strolled through Toronto's defence for an easy layup with 8:43, it was back to an 11-point deficit. The visitors would go up by 13 before the Raptors clawed their way back again. A pair of three-pointers by Lowry cut the deficit to three points with 1:36 to play. A Siakam basket with 46 seconds left made it a one-point game.

A big basket by Embiid gave the 76ers a three-point lead, and Green — who was 1-for-6 from the three-point line on the night — missed on a three-point attempt with about five seconds to play and it was game over.

The Sixers' victory snapped a 14-game losing streak at Scotiabank Arena, going back to November of 2012.

"Everybody wants to paint the picture that we haven't won here in how many years but I'm just glad that we came out on top," Butler said. "We don't care how many games we've lost or nothing like that. Going home we just need to do the same thing we did tonight."

A frustrated capacity Scotiabank Arena crowd of 19,800 that included Nashville Predators defenceman P.K. Subban and his girlfriend and Olympic downhill champion Lindsey Vonn, Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner, and Canadian tennis players Milos Raonic and Bianca Andreescu, beat a hasty exit.

The Raptors shot just 27 per cent from the three-point line and were clobbered on the boards 53-36.

For a brief couple of minutes, the Raptors looked like the dominant team of Game 1, grabbing an early 4-0 lead. But Toronto couldn't buy a basket — only four Raptors scored in the first quarter — and the Sixers went on a 21-10 run to take a 26-17 lead into the second.

Leonard had 11 points in the second quarter, but he got little help from his teammates, and when Butler shot the technical after Nurse argued a call, his basket gave the 76ers a 19-point lead. Butler would convert a five-point play — he was fouled on a three-pointer and Danny Green was whistled for a technical — later in the quarter. Green's three with 12 seconds left sliced Philly's lead to 51-38 at halftime.

Game 4 is Sunday in Philadelphia then the series returns to Toronto for Game 5.

{allcanada} Raonic withdraws from Madrid, Rome with injured knee

TORONTO — Injuries have once again become an issue for Milos Raonic, as Canada's top-ranked tennis player has withdrawn from Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome with a banged-up right knee.

Tennis Canada announced Raonic's withdrawal from the clay-court tournaments Monday.

It remains to be seen whether the world No. 16 will be ready for the French Open, which starts May 26. Raonic withdrew from the second Grand Slam of the season last year, as well as the Rome Masters, with a right knee ailment.

It's a blow to the hard-serving Canadian from Thornhill, Ont., who had some success at hard-court tournaments earlier this year. He reached the Indian Wells semifinals last month, losing to eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

Raonic hasn't played since losing in the second round of the Miami Open to Britain's Kyle Edmund on March 24.

Skipping the clay season to recover is not necessarily a bad thing for Raonic. His powerful game is much better suited to grass and hard-surface courts, though he did reach the semifinals in Rome in 2014.

Raonic, who reached a career-high world ranking of No. 3 in 2016, has battled multiple injuries throughout his career, including a sore back, wrist surgery, a right elbow ailment and a pinched nerve in his right foot.

{allcanada} Judge unseals documents connected to OHL IceDogs’ recruiting violations

An Ontario Superior Court judge has agreed to unseal documents related to an investigation into player recruiting violations by the Ontario Hockey League's Niagara IceDogs.

Following a Friday court hearing in Hamilton, Ont., Justice J.A. Ramsay in a two-page ruling wrote that he didn't agree with the OHL's argument that disclosure of the documents might dissuade players from filing future complaints with the league.

"There are reasonable alternatives to a sealing order, even a limited one," Ramsay wrote. "In the present case, the complainant has come forward and the witnesses have given recorded accounts. To prevent a chilling effect on future complaints, the league can enforce its rules against disclosure of confidential information."

Justice Ramsay wrote that the material would be unsealed on May 3 to give the OHL and IceDogs time to decide whether to appeal his decision.

Courts are obligated to provide notice to the media before agreeing to seal documents. Justice Ramsay acknowledged during the Friday hearing that didn't happen in the IceDogs case.

The judge released a decision in March that disclosed a law firm hired by the OHL had concluded that the IceDogs breached the league's player recruitment rules by entering into a secret "side deal" with a former player, promising him $10,000 for every year he played with them (four years) but then didn't pay him.

Justice Ramsay's decision in March also revealed that the OHL began an investigation into the IceDogs in May, 2018, after the former player emailed OHL commissioner David Branch with a complaint.

The law firm also investigated whether the IceDogs had manipulated the 2015 OHL entry draft and found the team had not done so.

That decision in March came a month after the OHL announced on Feb. 15 that the IceDogs would be fined $250,000 and lose two first-round draft picks as a penalty for undisclosed recruiting violations.

On March 15, the IceDogs filed an application in Ontario Superior Court in Hamilton asking a judge to set aside those penalties until a claim by the former player could be heard in an arbitration hearing.

That IceDogs' application, along with an affidavit sworn by team owner Bill Burke and the investigatory report scrutinizing the IceDogs actions, was sealed by Justice Ramsay, who denied the team's application.

TSN subsequently filed a motion with the court asking that the sealing order be rescinded.

The business operations of the IceDogs have been under scrutiny for several years as a group of former players have sued the OHL for back pay, arguing that major junior hockey players are employees and should be paid at least minimum wage.

Denise Burke, who owns the IceDogs alongside her husband Bill, testified in a Nov. 14, 2015, affidavit that while her OHL team brought in an average of $2.7 million in revenue in a season, it was a frequent money loser because annual expenses typically ranged between $2.7 million and $2.9 million.

"We knew that we wouldn't become rich owning a team, but seeing as this is our only business, we have always hoped that we would at least be able to break even and at least make more money than we spend, otherwise sooner or later the 'Bank of Burke' will run dry," Burke testified.

{allcanada} April 29: Montreal's Lemieux first rookie to score Game 7 OT goal

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: April 29

1986: Claude Lemieux scores 5:55 into overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 victory against the Hartford Whalers at the Forum in Game 7 of the Adams Division Final. The rookie forward sends the crowd of 17,546 into pandemonium when he picks up a loose puck behind the Hartford net, whips around in front and lifts a backhand over the shoulder of goalie Mike Liut and just under the crossbar for his sixth goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Lemieux, a 20-year-old who's spent most of the season in the minors, becomes the first rookie to score an overtime goal in Game 7 of an NHL playoff series.

It's a bitter loss for the Whalers, who tie the game when Dave Babych beats rookie goaltender Patrick Roy with 2:48 remaining in the third period.

1959: The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers begin a 23-game, 26-day exhibition tour of Europe, playing games in England, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany and Austria. The Rangers finish 11-9-3 against the Bruins, thanks in part to the addition of Bobby Hull. The 20-year-old Chicago Blackhawks forward, who makes the trip in place of Rangers forward Andy Bathgate, becomes "The Golden Jet" on the bigger ice surfaces, transforming from a checking center into a freewheeling left wing with great speed and a tremendous shot; he goes on to score 39 goals and win the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's top scorer in 1959-60.

1978: Lanny McDonald scores 4:13 into overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 2-1 victory against the New York Islanders in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Quarterfinals at Nassau Coliseum. Each team wins its three home games before McDonald beats Glenn Resch for the series winner, which moves Toronto into the Semifinals against the Canadiens.

1989: Ken Wregget, a last-minute substitute for an injured Ron Hextall, makes 39 saves to help the Philadelphia Flyers defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 in Game 7 of the Patrick Division Final at the Civic Center. The Flyers limit the Penguins to a second-period goal by Mario Lemieux. A shorthanded goal by Dave Poulin 6:57 into the second period puts the Flyers ahead 2-1 and Mike Bullard scores a power-play goal early in the third period. Scott Mellanby hits the empty net with 28 seconds left and the Flyers advance to the Wales Conference Final.

1993: Dino Ciccarelli of the Detroit Red Wings becomes the first player in NHL history to have a hat trick in the playoffs with three different teams. Ciccarelli, who's had postseason hat tricks with the Minnesota North Stars and Washington Capitals, scores a record-tying three power-play goals in Detroit's 7-3 road win against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 6 of the Norris Division Semifinals. He scores twice in the second period, then completes hat trick by beating Daren Puppa at 19:37 of the third.

1997: The Anaheim Ducks wrap up the first playoff series victory in their history by defeating the visiting Phoenix Coyotes 3-0 in Game 7 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Guy Hebert makes 31 saves for the first playoff shutout of his NHL career. Dave Karpa gives the Ducks a 1-0 lead when he scores 3:11 into the first period, and second-period goals by Steve Rucchin and Joe Sacco put the game away.

On the same night, Derek Plante of the Buffalo Sabres becomes the first player in NHL history to score the tying goal in the third period and the overtime winner in a Game 7. Plante ties the game by scoring 6:29 into the third period, then gets the winner at 5:24 of OT to give the Sabres a 3-2 victory against the visiting Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

2011: Benn Ferriero, a rookie forward playing in his first Stanley Cup Playoff game on his 24th birthday, celebrates by scoring at 7:03 of overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 victory against the Red Wings in the opener of their Western Conference Semifinal series at HP Pavilion. Ferriero's harmless-looking shot from the left circle becomes the game-winning goal when it hits the stick of Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart and goes through the legs of goaltender Jimmy Howard. It's the Sharks' fifth playoff win of the 2011 postseason and the fourth in overtime.

2015: Ben Bishop makes 31 saves and the Tampa Bay Lightning defeat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at Amalie Arena in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference First Round. The game is scoreless until defenseman Braydon Coburn scores 3:58 into the third period. Defenseman Anton Stralman hits the empty net to cap the win.

2017: Jean-Gabriel Pageau scores his fourth goal of the game at 2:54 of the second overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 6-5 victory against the Rangers at Canadian Tire Centre. New York leads 4-2 until Pageau scores his second of the game with 3:19 remaining in the third period. He ties the game with 1:02 remaining and goaltender Craig Anderson on the bench for an extra attacker.

{allcanada} Bottcher downs Koe in Champions Cup final

SASKATOON — Silvana Tirinzoni made some changes that paid off when it mattered most.

The Swiss team of Tirinzoni, Alina Paetz, who throws fourth, second Esther Neuenschwander and lead Melanie Barbezat defeated Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Man., 6-3 in the final of the Champions Cup on Sunday.

The Tirinzoni team worked quietly and methodically, never quite letting Einarson into the game. The team handled Rachel Homan much the same way in the semifinal on Saturday.

"It was a great finish to a great season," Tirinzoni said. "I almost don't know what to say... it's been such an amazing season with that team."

Tirinzoni reached her third Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling finals this season despite making changes to her foursome at the end of last season.

Paetz, a two-time world champion skip, and Barbezat joined Tirinzoni for 2019.

"It's hard to believe that it worked so fast," Tirinzoni said of her new team. "I thought it would take more time to adjust, but it has been a great start."

Meanwhile, Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton won his third consecutive event on the Grand Slam of Curling tour, with a 6-5 extra-end win over Kevin Koe of Calgary earlier in the day.

In the final, Tirinzoni held hammer from start to finish, breaking a 2-2 tie with two points in the fifth end.

Einarson had a shot for two in the sixth end, but was a shade heavy on a tapback. Giving Tirinzoni the hammer and a one-point lead heading into the seventh end was too much to overcome.

Einarson applied pressure in the seventh end, with two counters when Paetz went to throw her last rock. She hit and stuck to go two up coming home.

It got interesting in the eighth end when Tirinzoni missed an open takeout, leaving Einarson with the second, third and fourth counters.

Paetz made two sensational takeouts to save the game.

"(Alina) played amazing," Tirinzoni said. "When you have her behind you making everything it is hard to lose. She was amazing today again."

The victory was worth $40,000 to the Swiss crew.

Einarson and her team of third Val Sweeting, second Shannon Birchard and lead Briane Meilleur had a strong season on the bonspiel circuit. They won four consecutive World Curling Tour events in one stretch, and most recently captured the Players' Championship.

She vaulted to third on the world rankings, behind only Homan and Anna Hasselborg. Tirinzoni is fourth on the list.

After eight competitive ends in the men's final, Bottcher didn't need to throw his last rock in the extra frame after Koe was heavy with his attempt at a freeze with his final shot.

Bottcher and his Edmonton team of third Darren Moulding, second Brad Thiessen and lead Karrick Martin won the Meridian Cup in January in North Battleford, Sask., and the Players' Championship two weeks ago in Toronto.

Saskatoon treated them equally well. Bottcher won seven consecutive draws at Merlis Belsher Place on his way to the $40,000 first-place prize.

Bottcher said he is ready for a break.

"I am thoroughly ready for summer," Bottcher said.

"I joked with my guys going into the extra that I was pretty sure we only have to throw two more shots each and then we are on summer break. Our season is so long these days. It's nice to get a little bit of a break."

While there were many twists and turns, Bottcher took control of the final with a three-ender in the second end.

"The three early really set the tone," Bottcher said. "From that moment on, they were always chasing."

{allcanada} Hart Trophy finalists unveiled

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers were named finalists for the Hart Trophy on Sunday.

The award is given annually to the NHL player voted to be most valuable to his team.

The winner will be announced at the 2019 NHL Awards presented by Bridgestone at the Mandalay Bay Events Center sports and entertainment complex in Las Vegas on June 19.

Crosby had 100 points (35 goals, 65 assists) to become the only active NHL player with six 100-point seasons. He's finished among the top 5 in Hart Trophy voting in five of the past six seasons and will finish no worse than third this season. The 31-year-old center ranked fifth in the NHL in face-off wins (1,012) and 15th in face-off winning percentage (55.4 percent) among players with at least 750 face-offs taken and was tied for 10th among NHL centers with Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks with 21:00 in average ice time. Crosby looks to become the second player this century to win the Hart Trophy after beginning the season at age 30 or older (Joe Sakic, 2000-01).

Kucherov won the Art Ross Trophy by leading the NHL with 128 points (41 goals, 87 assists). It's the most points by a Russia-born NHL player, breaking Alexander Mogilny's single-season record of 127 set with the Buffalo Sabres in 1992-93 and the most by any NHL player since 1995-96, when Penguins center Mario Lemieux had 161 and teammate Jaromir Jagr had 149. The 25-year-old right wing also set Lightning records for assists and points in a season. The Lightning tied the NHL record for wins in a season with 62, equaling the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings, and finished with the fourth-most points in NHL history (128). Kucherov played all 82 games and had a point in 62, including 38 games with at least two points. Tampa Bay went 54-5-3 when he had a point and 8-11-1 when he didn't. Kucherov looks to become the second Lightning player to win the Hart Trophy, joining forward Martin St. Louis in 2003-04.

McDavid tied a personal NHL-best with 41 goals (2017-18) and had NHL career-highs of 75 assists and 116 points this season. He ranked second in the NHL in points, 12 behind Kucherov. He was held without a point 12 times and never went consecutive games without at least one. The 22-year-old center finished in a three-way tie with Gabriel Landeskog (Colorado Avalanche) and Brad Marchand (Boston Bruins) for game-winning goals (nine) and had NHL personal-highs in power-play goals (nine), power-play points (33), overtime goals (three), shooting percentage (17.1 percent) and face-off winning percentage (46.6 percent).

New Jersey Devils left wing Taylor Hall (No. 1 in the 2010 NHL Draft) won the Hart Trophy last season, and McDavid (No. 1 in the 2015 NHL Draft) won it in 2017.

{allcanada} Browne scores in debut as Impact edge Fire

MONTREAL — Omar Browne scored in the 83rd minute in his Major League Soccer debut as the Montreal Impact defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Evan Bush made two saves for his fifth clean sheet of the season for the Impact (5-3-2), who have won two games in a row for the first time this year.

Goalkeeper David Ousted made one save for the Fire (2-4-3), who have lost two consecutive games by a 1-0 score line after going unbeaten for four straight.

Browne broke the scoreless deadlock with seven minutes remaining in the match. The 24-year-old, who signed with Montreal on loan three weeks ago, took on two Fire defenders along the touchline, fired a shot off midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger and tapped the rebound past Ousted.

The newly acquired Panamanian striker came off the bench as a substitute in the 40th minute for the injured Clement Bayiha. Browne, the nephew of former Impact player Roberto Brown, saluted the 15,758 in attendance at Saputo Stadium after his goal.

The Impact have recorded four straight clean sheets at home dating back to last season. Montreal is unbeaten at Saputo Stadium in its past eight MLS matches and is 11-1-2 at home in the last 14.

It was just the second home game of the season for the Impact as they continue their surprising start to the 2019 campaign. Montreal was coming off a 3-0 victory against the New England Revolution on Wednesday.

Until Browne's goal, both teams lacked quality in the final third and could not take advantage of their few chances to start the match.

Chicago came closest to scoring in the first half but Bush and Samuel Piette combined to keep the ball out.

After a Chicago throw-in deep in Montreal's half in the sixth minute, Nicolas Gaitan fired a left-footed volley from inside the box that Bush parried away. The ball dropped to Nemanja Nikolic, who hit the post to Bush's left. The rebound fell to C.J. Sapong but his shot on target was blocked by Piette on the goal-line.

The Fire dropped to 0-3-1 on the road this season.

Notes: Ignacio Piatti (knee injury) missed his seventh straight game. … Chicago has been shut out in back-to-back games. … The Fire were playing the second game of a three-game road swing.
