{allcanada} Oklahoma City Thunder hand Toronto Raptors fourth straight loss

OKLAHOMA CITY — Svi Mykhailiuk scored 10 of his season-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, and the Oklahoma City Thunder rallied to beat the Toronto Raptors 113-103 on Wednesday night.

Mykhailiuk made 9 of 14 shots and had a career-high nine rebounds.

Moses Brown had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Isaiah Roby added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Oklahoma City, which snapped a three-game losing streak. The Thunder outrebounded the Raptors 64-35.

Oklahoma City was missing three regular starters. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remained out with right foot plantar fasciitis, Lu Dort was out due to concussion protocols and Darius Bazley was out with a left shoulder contusion. Rookie Aleksej Pokusevski, a recent addition to the starting lineup, was out because of health and safety protocols.

Gary Trent Jr. scored a career-high 31 points, and OG Anunoby added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Raptors, who have dropped 13 of their last 14 games.

Raptors guard Kyle Lowry sat out with a right foot infection. He played 24 minutes against Portland on Monday, but had missed the game before that against Portland on Sunday with right foot soreness.

Trent scored 20 points in the first half to help the Raptors take a 67-59 lead. Toronto shot 52% from the field in the first half. Brown led the Thunder with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Toronto led 89-87 heading into the fourth. The Thunder held the Raptors to 30% shooting in the third quarter to close the gap.

Oklahoma City took the lead early in the fourth. Mykhailiuk went up high to throw down a two-handed dunk on a lob from Justin Jackson that put the Thunder ahead 98-93. Mykhailiuk followed with a 3-pointer to push Oklahoma City's lead to eight. Toronto got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

{allcanada} WHL's Rockets suspend team activities for minimum of 14 days

The Western Hockey League announced Wednesday the Kelowna Rockets have had all activities suspended for a minimum of 14 days following six additional positive COVID-19 tests, taking the total to seven within the club after a positive test one day earlier.

The WHL says the positive COVID-19 test results belong to two staff members and four players.

In accordance with the WHL's return-to-play protocol, the Rockets have immediately isolated and are being tested, and anyone with close contact has been instructed to self-quarantine and monitor symptoms for 14 days.

As a result of the suspension of activities for the Rockets, nine of their games have been halted, as well as one between Vancouver and Prince George Wednesday night "out of an abundance of caution."

Kelowna is currently one of two bubble cities hosting games in B.C., along with Kamloops, as the WHL attempts to complete a 24-game season.

{allcanada} Matthews scores 24th goal as Leafs earn 3-1 win over Jets

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Auston Matthews scored his league-leading 24th goal and goaltender Jack Campbell stayed unbeaten this season and the Toronto Maple Leafs downed the Winnipeg Jets 3-1 on Wednesday to extend their lead atop the North Division to three points.

Adding to the Jets woes, captain Blake Wheeler did not play after the first period. There was no immediate word on a reason for his absence.

The teams meet again Friday at Bell MTS Place as Toronto continues its four-game road trip.

Zach Hyman and Alex Kerfoot also scored for Toronto. Mitch Marner, with two assists, earned his13th multi-point game of the season.

Josh Morrissey scored for the Jets.

The Leafs went 0-for-5 on the power play, extending a drought that goes back to March 9. But they did score short-handed.

Winnipeg, back home after a seven-game road trip, had won four of its previous five, including a 5-1 win Monday in Calgary. But it trailed 2-0 after a sluggish first period that saw Toronto dominate despite going 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Leafs were coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to visiting Edmonton on Monday. Toronto had won its previous three outings, including two in overtime, rebounding from a poor stretch that saw it lose six of seven.

With No. 1 goalie Frederik Andersen back in Toronto awaiting further injury evaluation of a lower-body injury, Campbell started for the fourth time in the past five games. Campbell, who missed the Edmonton game Monday with a lower-body injury, made 26 saves for the win. He improved to 7-0-0 on the season.

It was career game No. 299 as a Jet for goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who stopped 23 shots. Only Ondrej Pavelec (379) has played 300-plus games for the franchise.

Matthews opened the scoring at 4:40 to punctuate a sharp Leafs opening. Hyman drove to the net and Winnipeg's Pierre Luc-Dubois and Derek Forbort ran into each other, leaving Matthews to score from close range.

Forbort, in pain after the collision, briefly went to the Jets dressing room.

Matthews has scored the opening goal of the game six times this season. Marner, with an assist on Matthews' goal, ran his points streak against the Jets to five games this season, the first Leaf to have a five-game point streak against Winnipeg.

Hyman made it 2-0 at 10:47, poking the puck in from in-close after Matthews hit the post following a nice move by Marner as the Leafs top line swarmed the Winnipeg net. The Jets unsuccessfully challenged for goalie interference on Hyman.

Toronto held a 13-2 edge in shots before Winnipeg closed the margin to 14-6 at the end of the first. Hyman had six shots alone in the period.

The Jets had more life in the second, outshooting Toronto 16-7 in the period. But despite three straight Toronto penalties, they had to settle for exchanging goals with the Leafs.

Paul Stastny appeared to lose a tooth after taking T.J. Brodie's stick to the mouth late in the period. Kerfoot scored short-handed on the ensuing double-minor penalty, outpacing Morrissey after the puck got out of the Toronto zone.

Morrissey redeemed himself by scoring on the same power play, his shot beating Campbell through traffic at 17:15, with 6 seconds remaining in the first of Brodie's two minors.

Toronto played a controlled third period to preserve the win.

NOTES: The Leafs were the last team in the North Division to visit Winnipeg this season. The teams split the first four meetings in Toronto. ... After playing 12 of 14 games on the road, the Jets play 10 of the next 15 at home starting Monday.

{allcanada} Demko receives five-year contract from Canucks

Thatcher Demko received a five-year contract from the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, according to a tweet by owner Francesco Aquilini. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 25-year-old goalie could have become a restricted free agent after this season. He is 12-12-1 with a 2.77 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and one shutout in 25 games in his second full NHL season.

Demko is 8-3-0 with a 2.15 GAA and an NHL-high .937 save percentage in March (minimum 10 games). He was named the NHL Second Star for the week ending March 7 after going 3-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA, .969 save percentage and his first regular-season NHL shutout, a 4-0 win against the Winnipeg Jets on March 1.

Selected by Vancouver in the second round (No. 36) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Demko is 30-25-4 with a 2.92 GAA and .911 save percentage in 62 NHL regular-season games (59 starts) and 2-1 in four Stanley Cup Playoff games (three starts).

He helped the Canucks rally after they trailed 3-1 in the Western Conference Second Round last season against the Vegas Golden Knights, but Vancouver lost the best-of-7 series in seven games. Demko made 42 saves in a 2-1 victory in Game 5 to become the first rookie goalie to win an elimination game in his playoff debut since Jose Theodore for the Montreal Canadiens against the New Jersey Devils in Game 5 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. He made 48 saves for a 4-0 victory in Game 6, the most in a postseason shutout by an NHL rookie, and 128 saves on 130 shots in the series (0.64 GAA, .985 save percentage).

The Canucks enter their home game against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. ET; SN, TVAS, SNP, SNW, NHL.TV) tied with the Flames for fifth in the seven-team Scotia North Division, four points behind the Canadiens. The top four teams will make the playoffs.

{allcanada} Price gets 1st shutout of season, Montreal tops Oilers 4-0

MONTREAL (AP) Brendan Gallagher and Artturi Lehkonen each had a goal and an assist and the Montreal Canadiens returned from lengthy break and beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 on Tuesday night.

Montreal was playing for the first time since a 5-4 home shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks on March 20. Two days later, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia went on the NHL's COVID list. As a result, the Canadiens had four games postponed -- three with Edmonton and another against Ottawa.

With its revised schedule, Montreal faces playing its remaining 24 games in 42 days. Kotkaniemi was removed from the COVID list Monday and scored Tuesday. Armia remains sidelined.

Tomas Tatar also scored for Montreal (15-8-9). Carey Price stopped 16 shots for the shutout, his first of the season and the 49th of his career.

Connor McDavid had a goal disallowed for Edmonton (22-14-1), which was coming off a 3-2 overtime road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night. McDavid had his 11-game point streak (seven goals, 16 assists) snapped, yet still leads the NHL in scoring with 63 points (21 goals, 42 assists).

Mikko Koskinen finished with 28 saves in the loss.

Montreal was still without Tyler Toffoli (lower-body injury), who has a team-high 18 goals. Eric Staal, acquired from Buffalo on Friday for 2021 third- and fifth-round picks, didn't play as he must serve a mandatory quarantine first.

Kotkaniemi needed just 18 seconds to open the scoring with his fifth of the season. After Kotkaniemi converted Paul Byron's centering pass, Montreal went on the power play following Edmonton's challenge of the goal being unsuccessful.

After failing to convert on the power play, Montreal went ahead 2-0 on Lehkonen's third of the year at 3:23. It took Edmonton more than five minutes to register its first shot on goal after the Canadiens had eight.

Gallagher gave Montreal its three-goal advantage at 15:59, diving to tap in a rebound for his 13th goal as the Canadiens outshot Edmonton 15-7.

McDavid scored what would've been his 22nd goal at 13:55 of the second, but it was called off by a successful Montreal offside challenge.

The Canadiens countered with Tatar's seventh of the season following a long setup pass from Danault at 17:54.

NOTES: Veteran forward Michael Frolik made his season debut for Montreal. The 33-year-old winger signed a one-year contract as a free agent during the off-season and had been on the team's taxi squad.

Oilers: Host Calgary Flames on Friday.

{allcanada} Canucks' Adam Gaudette tests positive for COVID-19, enters protocols

Vancouver Canucks forward Adam Gaudette was pulled from practice Tuesday after testing positive for COVID-19.

Coach Travis Green said the result came back midway through the session.

``Adam Gaudette had a positive test come in this morning, a COVID test, and we're following NHL protocol and he left the ice,'' he said.

The league's rules require players and staff to be tested daily and any time an individual's initial test comes back positive, the lab does a second test on the initial sample.

If the second test is negative, a second sample is collected. If that second sample returns a positive result, it is considered to be a ``confirmed positive.''

The league requires individuals who test positive to self isolate for 10 days, and for close contacts to self isolate for 14 days.

Gaudette, 24, has seven points (three goals, four assists) in 33 games for Vancouver this season.

The Canucks were also missing Jake Virtanen at Tuesday's practice. Green said the right-winger ``wasn't feeling well so he stayed home.''

Vancouver (16-18-3) is scheduled to host the Calgary Flames (16-18-3) on Wednesday.

The team is following the NHL's protocols in determining next steps, Green said.

``Our players get tested every day. Obviously we were tested this morning and we'll see how those results come back when we get them back,'' he said.

Vancouver forward J.T. Miller and defenceman Jordie Benn missed multiple games in January after being placed on the league's COVID-19 protocol list.

A player on the list has not necessarily tested positive.

The Montreal Canadiens had four games postponed last week when forwards Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia were added to the list.

Kotkaniemi was removed from the list ahead of the Canadiens' tilt with the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday, but Armia remained.

Any COVID-related absences would magnify an injury crunch for the Canucks.

Vancouver is still without star centre Elias Pettersson, who hasn't played since March 2. Green said Tuesday that Pettersson's undisclosed injury - reported to be his wrist - was worse than originally thought and he's expected to miss ``a few more games, at least.''

{allcanada} Pettersson not ready to return from injury for Canucks

Elias Pettersson will not come off long-term injured reserve when he is eligible Wednesday for the Vancouver Canucks, coach Travis Green said.

The top-line center has missed 11 games with an upper-body injury after originally thought to have a day-to-day timeline. The Canucks end a six-day break when they host the Calgary Flames on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. ET; SN, TVAS, SNP, SNW, NHL.TV).

"Definitely was more serious than we thought originally," Green said Tuesday. "We didn't think it was going to be this long. It hasn't gotten any better to a point where he can play yet and I still think he's going to be out for a few more games at least."

Pettersson scored 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 26 games this season, including 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in his last 14 games. He hasn't played since March 2 against the Winnipeg Jets; he took part in a morning skate two days later but left early and hasn't joined the team since.

Green said Pettersson is skating on his own and that surgery isn't a concern.

"Not yet," Green said. "We feel like he's going to make a recovery."

Forward Travis Boyd is expected to make his Canucks debut Wednesday after being claimed off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 22. Boyd had to quarantine for seven days and practiced with Vancouver for the first time Tuesday. He was on the third line and second power-play unit.

Boyd scored eight points (three goals, five assists) in 20 games for Toronto this season and has scored 39 points (11 goals, 28 assists) in 105 NHL games with the Washington Capitals and Maple Leafs.

"I've been on some good teams with a lot of good players, and it's been hard for me to move up the lineup or even stay in the lineup consistently," Boyd said. "I truthfully do believe I am an everyday NHL player, and this is a big opportunity."

Forward Adam Gaudette was added to the NHL COVID-19 protocol list Tuesday. Green said Gaudette left the ice after it was learned he tested positive. Forward Jake Virtanen did not practice because of illness.

{allcanada} Canadian Milos Raonic falls short in round of 16 at Miami Open

Canada's Milos Raonic is out of the Miami Open after losing a close match in the round of 16.

The 12th-seeded Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to No. 26 seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland on Tuesday.

It was the second upset in a row against a Canadian for Hurkacz, who knocked off No. 6 seed Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., on Monday, and his third against a North American opponent after downing American Denis Kudla in the second round.

``Just the way it worked out this week so far,'' Hurkacz said. ``Very happy with my performances.

``Obviously pumped to play another match here in Miami. Just trying my best.''

Raonic fell one win short of making the quarterfinals at the ATP Masters 1000 event for the fourth time.

Hurkacz will face the winner of a match later Monday between No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and No. 24 seed Lorenzo Sonego of Italy.

Hurkacz got a mini-break on the first point of the third-set tiebreak and never trailed. Raonic fought off three match points before Hurkacz finished him off.

Raonic saved 10-of-11 break points he faced in the match, while converting on one-of-two.

Raonic's big weapon - his serve - wasn't as effective as his opponent's. The Canadian won 75 per cent of his points when he got his first serve in, while Hurkacz was good for 81 per cent.

Hurkacz had 14 aces, two more than Raonic.

``I think I served very well and that helped me to stay in the game and be competitive against Milos... He's a very dangerous player,'' Hurkacz said.

``I'm pretty happy with my serve today, and I felt I was returning pretty good. In the middle of the first set he was serving bombs and I was just trying to hold my serve to be there.''

In a women's doubles quarterfinal Tuesday, Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and Giuliana Olmos of Mexico beat Americans Coco Gauff and Caty McNally 6-4, 7-6 (4).

In women's singles, eighth-seeded Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., will face unseeded Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in a quarterfinal Wednesday night.

{allcanada} Mark Messier book on leadership, teamwork coming in October

NEW YORK (AP) — Hockey great Mark Messier wants fans to know he had a lot of help on his path to the NHL Hall of Fame.

Messier's memoir "No One Wins Alone" will be published in October by Gallery Books, a Simon & Schuster imprint. Messier, 60, will write about being the son of a hockey player and coach, Doug Messier; a teammate of Wayne Gretzky on the Edmonton Oilers; and captain of the New York Rangers, among other highlights.

"I thought I was in the hockey business for 25 years, but I eventually realized I was in the people business," Messier said in a statement Tuesday. "Leading meant getting behind my teammates, or out in front of them; doing whatever was necessary to help them fulfill their potential. To me, helping people succeed was the game within the game. It was fascinating, frustrating, challenging, and most of all rewarding. My wish is that my story and the lessons in this book will inspire people to be their best."

During his 25 years in the NHL, Messier played on six Stanley Cup championship teams. He is among the all-time leaders in regular season points, regular season games played and playoff points. In 2007, the NHL started the Mark Messier Leadership Award for setting an example on and off the ice.

The league hired Haley to oversee multiple league operations including the draft, player development and relationships with other hockey entities.

"How I see it all fitting together is obviously tapping into all 24 hours of the day," Haley told The Canadian Press.

"I think this role with the NWHL is one that I feel I can rely a lot on my past experience. The work won't be easy, but it will be familiar just in terms of the hockey operations side of things, which is something I've been doing for the majority of my professional life."

Haley, who lives in Cobourg, Ont., was an assistant coach of Canadian women's teams that won Olympic gold in 2014 and a world championship in 2012.

She's coached U Sports women's hockey for more than 20 years, first with the Saint Mary's Huskies in the Atlantic University Sport conference and then the Rams for the last decade in Toronto.

The NWHL, which pays annual player salaries reportedly up to US$15,000, expanded into Canada last year with the Toronto Six. The league has yet to confirm reports of further expansion into Montreal.

The Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Minnesota Whitecaps and Metropolitan Riveters (New Jersey) are the league's American clubs.

The NWHL's reach into Canada continues, however, with the addition of Haley to its front office.

"Lisa Haley has built a distinguished hockey career as a coach and player development leader in Canada," NWHL interim commissioner Ty Tumminia told The Canadian Press in an email.

"Her relationships with stakeholders at both amateur and professional levels will help drive the continued growth of the NWHL and women's hockey."

Haley won't speculate on what her hiring means for the NWHL's relationship with the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association (PWHPA).

PWHPA players, including the stars of the Canadian and American national teams, refuse to play in the NWHL as they seek a league that allows them to play hockey for a living, and provides the competitive supports the men's pro leagues have.

Hockey Hall of Famer and four-time Olympic gold medallist Jayna Hefford is the face of the PWHPA.

She and Haley have a relationship because Haley coached her on the Canadian women's team.

"I know Jayna Hefford well," Haley said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for her. She's got every intention to create a viable professional women's hockey league as well.

"Whether that brings these two entities together or not, I guess that remains to be seen and that's beyond something that I can control.

"I'm passionate about having a professional league and I'm willing to be part of what the conversation needs to look like for that to happen."

Tumminia told CP in the email "we want everyone involved in women's hockey to work together to advance the sport."

The Rams' 2020-21 season wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic, Haley had time between trips to Hungary to join the Toronto Six as an assistant coach to Digit Murphy for a shortened season.

The NWHL attempted to run an abbreviated season and the Isobel Cup playoffs in Lake Placid, N.Y., over two weeks in late January and early February.

The league halted the season on the eve of the semifinals because several people tested positive for the coronavirus. The Isobel Cup was completed Friday and Saturday in Boston.

Conversations with Tumminia in Lake Placid led to Haley's hiring.

"I had a lot to say to Ty in terms of how things were running with the tournament and in some aspects around the operations side of things, and just had a few questions," Haley said.

"We both agreed we wanted to finish that conversation. She did reach out to me shortly after and talk about what type of knowledge I could bring and what the role could look like with the league."

Tumminia, a former minor league baseball executive and owner, took over as interim commissioner last year for NWHL founder Dani Rylan Kearney.

"It didn't take long in my conversations with Lisa to understand and appreciate just how passionate she is about the women's game and her motivation to help strengthen and grow the NWHL," Tumminia said.

"Her depth of knowledge in the sport and in particular with player development and scouting is an area I value given my own experiences in baseball.

"We spoke about how we can grow those areas in our league and elevate our player draft and free agency process."

Haley wasn't behind the Six bench with Murphy last Friday, when Toronto fell 6-2 to the Pride in the semifinal.

Haley intended to fly from Budapest directly to Boston after a women's team camp, but found out U.S. travel restrictions don't allow travellers from Hungary to enter the country.

She instead headed home to Ontario to observe the 14-day quarantine mandated by the Canadian government.

{allcanada} Hamonic reportedly wants to stay with Canucks

Travis Hamonic reportedly has gained interest around the NHL but it appears the Canucks want to keep the defenseman.

"We like him as a player and individual," coach Travis Green said Sunday. "He's hard to play against and has been everything we'd hope he'd be. Hopefully he can stay here."

Sportsnet reported Hamonic, who was born in St. Malo, Manitoba, prefers to play for a team in Western Canada because of family reasons.

Hamonic has two assists and is averaging 18:18 of ice time in 19 games, and recently played on a defense pair with Quinn Hughes. Hamonic leads Canucks defensemen with 7.25 blocked shots per 60 minutes of ice time. The Canucks are sixth in the Scotia North Division, two points out of fourth. The top four teams will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"'Hammer' has been a good addition to our group," Green said. "He's got good size, closes hard, he's got a heavy stick. I think he's been a solid addition for us."

{allcanada} Scheifele scores 2 as Jets beat Flames 5-1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Mark Scheifele had two goals and an assist and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Calgary Flames 5-1 Monday night.

Nate Thompson, Andrew Copp and Pierre-Luc Dubois also scored for Winnipeg. Nikolaj Ehlers had three assists and Kyle Connor added two. Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves for the win.

Winnipeg leads the nine-game season series against Calgary 5-2-1. After three meetings in four days, the teams don't face each other again until May 5.

Elias Lindholm scored for Calgary. Jacob Markstrom stopped 19 shots over two periods and David Rittich had five saves on six shots in the third.

Winnipeg remained second in the North Division and a point behind the front-running Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Flames trailed the fourth-place Montreal Canadiens, who held down the final playoff berth, by two points.

Scheifele scored his second of the game at 3:31 of the second to push the Jets' lead to 3-1. Ehlers skated the puck deep and dished to Scheifele, who top-shelfed his own rebound.

Officials disallowed a Flames goal at 5:32 ruling that Milan Lucic interfered with Hellebuyck on the play.

Copp put Winnipeg up by three with 5:29 left in the second as he redirected Ehlers' cross-ice setup past Markstrom's right toe.

Dubois scored on a rising wrist shot from the top of the circle at 1:04 of the third period. It was the second shot Rittich faced in the game.

A tic-tac-toe passing play below the hashmarks with Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk opened the net for Lindholm's power-play goal 2:24 into the game.

Winnipeg took the lead with two goals in less than two minutes late in the first.

Thompson tied it with 3:41 left. The play was reviewed to determine if he'd kicked Dylan DeMelo's shot on goal into the net but it stood. Schiefele's one-timer off the rush on Connor's pass beat Markstrom stick-side with 1:47 to go in the period.
