TORONTO — Pascal Siakam had 31 points and 12 rebounds and the Raptors routed Atlanta 139-109 on Monday, Toronto's seventh consecutive win over the Hawks at Scotiabank Arena.

Scottie Barnes was masterful at point guard in place of injured all-star Fred VanVleet en route to 21 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Gary Trent Jr. had 21 points, O.G. Anunoby finished with 14 points and six steals, Chris Boucher chipped in with 11 points and Precious Achiuwa had 10 for Toronto (4-3).

Dejounte Murray led Atlanta (4-3) with 20 points.

On the heels of an ugly 112-90 loss to Philadelphia on Friday, the Raptors led for most of the night, and were up by as many as 17 points late in the third quarter, before taking a 95-80 advantage in the fourth.

A pair of Achiuwa free throws put Toronto ahead by 20 points less than a minute into the fourth quarter, before Murray's driving layup sliced the difference to 15. But the Raptors answered every Hawks run, and when rookie Christian Koloko — who earned his first NBA start — slashed to the hoop for a dunk, the basket gave Toronto a 24-point lead, much to the delight of the capacity Scotiabank Arena crowd of 19,800 fans.

Fans chanted "M-V-P!" when Siakam connected on two free throws with 5:22 to play. The baskets put Toronto up by 29, and coach Nick Nurse emptied his bench at that point.

The Raptors shot 50 per cent from the field, and 41.2 per cent from behind the arc. They committed just seven turnovers, while forcing 18 Hawks giveaways, for 24 points.

Barnes hit three consecutive three-pointers in less than a minute in the first quarter, and Boucher's three-pointer with 3:07 left in the frame capped a 7-0 run that put Toronto up by 11. They led 34-28 to start the second.

Young's three midway through the second quarter saw the Hawks go up by three points, but Barnes' three-pointer was the exclamation mark on a Raptors' 20-4 run that had them back up by 13. Toronto headed into the halftime break leading 64-53.

The Hawks pulled to within a point early in the third quarter, but their momentum was short-lived, and when Trent connected on a pair of free throws late in the frame, the Raptors went ahead by 17, their biggest lead to that point.

VANVLEET OUT

VanVleet will have to wait another game at least to make up for his 0-for-11 shooting night in Friday's loss to Philadelphia. He sat out Monday's game a day after he was unable to practise due to lower back stiffness.

"Thought he'd be ready to go tonight, but was not," said Nurse.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

The game marked the first time AJ Griffin, the son of Raptors' assistant Adrian Griffin and a rookie with the Hawks, faced his dad's team in an NBA game.

"It's pretty cool, especially for Griff, Griff and I are pretty close," Nurse said. "We watched a lot of Duke basketball (where AJ played) last year. He's proud … He's a very, very nice young man. When the ball goes up, we've got to make sure he doesn't shoot it open, because he can shoot."

UP NEXT

The Raptors head to Texas for games in San Antonio on Wednesday and Dallas on Friday. They're back home to host DeMar DeRozan and the Chicago Bulls on Sunday.

The Hawks head to New York and play the Knicks on Wednesday.

{allcanada} Sandra Oh, Ann Marie Fleming Reunite On Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Can I Get A Witness’, One Of Four New Titles On Mongrel International’s AFM Slate

Sandra Oh

Killing Eve star Sandra Oh is reuniting with award-winning Canadian director Ann Marie Fleming on sci-fi thriller Can I Get a Witness.

The project, which is in development, is among four new features being launched at the American Film Market this week by Canadian sales outfit Mongrel International, a division of Toronto-based independent film distributor Mongrel Media.

Set in the near future, the film unfolds in a reality where, in order to save the planet, "death is everyone's job", with 50-year-olds making the sacrifice, while teenage artists have to document it.

Fleming and Oh previously collaborated on the award-winning 2016 animated feature Window Horses. Producers on the new project are Eric Mussolum and Jayme Pfahl.

Mongrel will also launch sales on two other projects in development: Jason Lapeyre's crime thriller Stealing Is Bad starring Nick Stahl (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) and Kevin Pollak (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Sam McGlynn's 1989, a prequel to the Fubar cult hits.

Stealing Is Bad revolves around an ambitious teenager who teams up with a middle-aged ex-convict to pull off a heist at the fast-food restaurant where they work. Juliette Hagopian produces.

1989 is billed as a prequel to the 2002 cult film Fubar, set against the world of heavy metal fandom, and its sequel Fubar 2. Dave Lawrence, one of the headbanging protagonists of the original is blasted back to 1989.

Paul Spence, who co-created the Fubar franchise, takes writing credits, with McGlynn directing. Spence produces with Kyle Irving.

Further new additions to the slate include the completed horror thriller Hands That Bind by Kyle Armstrong.

The drama unfolds in a struggling farming community hit by mysterious occurrences such as cattle mutilations, drought, a missing teenager, paranoia, and unexplained lights in the sky.

The cast features Paul Sparks (House of Cards), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Will Oldham (A Ghost Story) and Nicholas Campbell (Goon) and it is produced by Blake McWilliam.

World rights for all territories are available, except Canada, where Mongrel Media will distribute.

"Our 2022 AFM lineup is an eclectic mix of genre with highly original storytelling," said Andrew Frank, co-president of Canadian distributor Mongrel Media, who is overseeing sales at AFM on behalf of Mongrel International.

"We know how critical cast is in the marketplace, and our three films in development already have key cast attached.  Our finished film, Hands That Bind, has a stellar cast with Bruce Dern and Paul Sparks."

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced Monday they have signed American linebacker Alvin Jones Jr. and American quarterback Levi Lewis.

Jones Jr., 27, returns to the Roughriders after rejoining the team in October. The Savannah, Ga., native signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and spent two seasons on the Ravens' practice roster (2018-19).

Jones Jr. previously signed with the Riders in October of 2021 and attended training camp in 2022. He saw action in both preseason games, recording a tackle and a pass deflection.

A product of the University of El Paso, Jones Jr. played five seasons as a Miner, appearing in 47 games, making 343 tackles, 40 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, one interception, seven pass deflections and three forced fumbles. Jones Jr. received a plethora of accolades over his collegiate career, including being named an All-Conference USA Honourable Mention (2017),  All-Conference USA Second Team (2016), All-Conference USA Honourable Mention (2015) and All-Conference USA Freshman (2014).

The 24-year-old Lewis from Baton Rouge, La., returns after signing with the Riders in August. Before his time with the Riders, the former University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajun' spent time with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft. Lewis attended rookie camp with the team.

Over his four collegiate seasons, Lewis completed 721 passes for 9,203 yards, 75 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He picked up an additional 1,088 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. Lewis left the school as their career leader in passing touchdowns and ranks second all-time in passing yards. In 2020 and 2021, Lewis earned Second-Team All-Sun Belt honours.

VANCOUVER -- Quinn Hughes has been cleared to return for the Vancouver Canucks when they host the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

The defenseman, who has missed the past four games with a lower-body injury, practiced on his usual pair with Luke Schenn on Sunday and said he's looking forward to playing against his brother, Devils center Jack Hughes.

"I feel really good," Hughes said. "It's not fun being injured, so I'm excited to come back and it should be fun, especially against the Devils with my parents in town, my brother in town. We need the points, but it should be a fun game."

Hughes said the injury had been lingering since he missed a week late in training camp. He is averaging 27:14 of ice time per game this season, second in the NHL to Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings (27:36), but said the heavy workload wasn't a factor in having to miss any games.

"I thought it was behind me, and then after every game it just got worse and then to a point where we realized we had to shut it down for a minute," Hughes said. "I'm feeling really good now, and hopefully it's behind me."

Hughes has five assists in five games for Vancouver, which started the season 0-5-2 but has won its past two games.

"It was stressful, but we all wanted to win and expect a lot from ourselves, so I'm glad we got two, and hopefully I can come in and help as well," Hughes said.

Defenseman Riley Stillman is also expected to return against New Jersey after missing four games with an undisclosed injury. He was paired in practice with defenseman Ethan Bear, who skated for the first time since being acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.

"It's just going to be really nice to just honestly get to play a game and compete again," said Bear, who was a healthy scratch for all seven games with the Hurricanes prior to the trade. "That's what I'm looking forward to the most."

Center Jack Studnicka also practiced with the Canucks for the first time since being acquired from the Boston Bruins on Thursday. He was the center on a line with Tanner Pearson and Nils Hoglander and is expected to play against the Devils.

"I'm psyched. I can't wait," said Studnicka, who played one game for the Bruins this season. "I've been staying ready in Boston, but they've got quite the lineup of centermen, so I'm excited for the opportunity here.

Brock Boeser did not practice Sunday after missing the past three games with an undisclosed injury. Coach Bruce Boudreau, however, said the forward could be cleared to return after meeting with a doctor Monday morning.

Boeser missed most of training camp and the preseason after having hand surgery on Sept. 26, but he played in the first six games of the season before coming out of the lineup.

"We'll know his status whether he can practice with us tomorrow or not," Boudreau said. "He feels ready. He's been skating."

LOS ANGELES (AP) Kevin Fiala had a goal and an assist, and Adrian Kempe and Viktor Arvidsson scored power-play goals in the second period of the Los Angeles Kings' 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Gabriel Vilardi also scored during the Kings' three-goal second period, and captain Anze Kopitar had two assists. Cal Petersen made 26 saves in an encouraging bounce-back victory for Los Angeles, which had lost three of four after a solid start to the season.

Captain John Tavares had a power-play goal and Pierre Engvall also scored for the Leafs, who have lost three straight on their West Coast swing. Ilya Samsonov stopped 25 shots.

Fiala came through with another big offensive game in his first season with the Kings. The prolific Swiss scorer has nine points in 10 games for LA, including three multi-point outings so far.

Petersen also had his best performance after yielding 12 goals in his first seven periods of action this season.

But Tavares stuffed home his fourth goal of the season in the first period on the rebound after William Nylander shot the puck off the back boards.

Although Toronto scored a game's opening goal for only the third time in nine games this season, the Leafs struggled to get the puck out of their zone for long stretches of the Kings' strong second period.

Los Angeles claimed the lead with a pair of power-play goals. Kempe, who played his 400th career NHL game, put a one-timer into the top corner off a cross-ice pass from Fiala before Arvidsson cashed in a setup from Phillip Danault exactly six minutes later.

Vilardi then sneaked into the slot and buried a remarkable backhand pass from behind the net by Kopitar, the franchise's career scoring leader.

Engvall trimmed the deficit to 3-2 late in the second with his first goal of the season off a loose puck in front after a Kings turnover.

Fiala pushed the Kings' lead again early in the third when he robbed Rasmus Sandin of the puck the skated in for a breakaway goal.

RECALL

Los Angeles called up F Rasmus Kupari from its AHL affiliate before the game for his NHL season debut. The Finnish first-round pick in 2018 played 57 games for the Kings last season, scoring 13 points.

{allcanada} Rourke solid in return for Lions

BC Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke made his much-anticipated return in Friday's regular season finale against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, completing 7-of-11 passes for 68 yards before leaving the game before the end of the first half.

The Lions went into the break trailing the Bombers 17-6.

Rourke was not scheduled to finish the game and TSN's Farhan Lalji reports that the abbreviated outing was 'mission accomplished' for Rourke and the Lions as he attempts to get back into form before the Lions playoff game next week against the Calgary Stampeders.

{allcanada} Canadians Schizas, Daleman 1-2 after short program at Skate Canada International

Gabrielle Daleman

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — The last time Madeline Schizas competed in Mississauga, at the 2020 Canadian championships, she was just 16 years old. Few knew her name.

On Friday, moments after laying down the best short program at Skate Canada International, Schizas marvelled at how life has changed in the years since.

"It's weird to think how different of an experience that was," Schizas said. "I was really new to everything.

"I was more perhaps more excited about Piper's (Gilles) dog that was in the change room that year, than I was about being a national (bronze) medallist," she said, with a laugh. "I was like, 'Oh, wow, this is cool, I guess.'"

The 19-year-old from Oakville, Ont., came into this week's Grand Prix event as the top Canadian after making a statement in the team event at the Beijing Olympics. And she delivered, scoring 67.90 for her program to the "Black Swan" soundtrack.

"It's just a totally different experience," Schizas said. "It's a little bit crazy for me to think that it wasn't that long ago, that wasn't even a full three years ago. And it's so exciting to be back in this building kind of in a different position in my career."

Schizas landed three triples in her "evil" program she said was a departure from her "go-to kind of persona." She'll skate to the more upbeat "West Side Story" soundtrack in Saturday's free program.

Canadian teammate Gabrielle Daleman is just 1.25 points behind in second, in her first Grand Prix appearance since she was 10th at Skate Canada in 2019.

Canada's world bronze medallists Gilles and Paul Poirier are the leaders after the rhythm dance.

Schizas developed in relative obscurity during the pandemic, with most skating competitions held either virtually, live but with no fans, or cancelled altogether.

Her performances in the team event in Beijing were a revelation, and huge reason Canada was fourth — and are still in the running for bronze pending the outcome of the Russian doping scandal.

Schizas said the heightened expectations post-Beijing took a toll earlier this season. A bad case of nerves saw her finish fifth at the recent Nebelhorn Trophy after a horrible 10th-place free program.

"That bad skate there was a bit of a blessing because I got home and I thought, well, we're still orbiting the sun. It's really not the end of the world to skate bad every once in a while," she said. "So, some of the pressure I put on myself is off a little bit."

Schizas also recently moved to Hamilton, Ont., to study human behaviour at McMaster University. Because of the pandemic, it's the first time she's been in a live classroom since Grade 11.

Daleman, meanwhile, was thrilled with her clean skate to Rhianna's "Diamonds," after a summer that included a laundry list of ailments, including COVID-19, an abdominal tear, an injured back from a car accident, and a Bell's palsy diagnosis.

"It just goes to show how strong I am and how much I love this sport and that nothing, no one, is going to hold me back or take me down," Daleman said.

The 24-year-old from Newmarket, Ont., had been one of Canada's promising young skaters, making her Olympic debut in 2014 at just 16. She won world bronze in 2017, but her career has been a roller-coaster since.

"I think it's nice because you have Gabby, who has been kind of a veteran … she's kind of making a comeback," Gilles said. "And Maddie is finally in her element and feeling confident. So, we're proud to be a part of their team, and support them every step of the way. It's been an honour to watch Maddie grow as an athlete and really step into her own and be a leader. So, we're really thrilled for the two of them."

American Ava Marie Ziegler is third with 66.49.

Gilles and Poirier scored a personal best 87.23 points with their rumba rhythm dance in their season debut.

"Especially first time out, there's always those jitters, no one's seen the programs yet, you don't know how it's going to be received, if people are going to enjoy it, if really the crowd is going to get into your energy," Poirier said.

Gilles and Poirier, who are both 30, took six weeks off this past summer to ponder their future after the pandemic robbed them of any enjoyment in the Beijing Olympic season.

"Really the goal for this season, especially for this first competition, was really just to get out and compete with that joy of skating again," Poirier said. "And I think we really felt that between the two of us today, we felt connected, we felt grounded, and we felt in our element."

Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Great Britain head into Saturday's free dance in second with 83.80, while Americans Caroline Green and Michael Parsons are third (76.13).

Japan's Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara are the leaders in pairs. Canadian Brooke McIntosh — whose sister is swim star Summer — and Benjamin Mimar are fourth.

The short program for men's singles closed Friday's competition at Paramount Fine Foods Centre.

Canadian international Samuel Piette signed a three-year contract extension with CF Montreal on Friday, with an option year in 2026.

The 27-year-old has spent the past six seasons in Montreal, appearing his 150th career game with the club earlier this year.

"We are very pleased to sign Samuel, a local Quebec and Canadian player, to this extension," CF Montréal vice-president and chief sporting officer Olivier Renard said. "Already an important part of our Club for over five years, Samuel will help us continue moving our project forward in the years to come. He will continue to play a key role both at the Club and with the national team, as well as pursue his ongoing work off the field."

"I am very happy to continue my career at home here in Montreal," said Samuel Piette. "It is an honour and a great pride to wear the CF Montréal jersey and represent my city on and off the field. I want to continue to inspire young people across Quebec."

{allcanada} Senators D Zub out 1-2 weeks with upper body injury

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Ottawa Senators defenceman Artem Zub will miss one-to-two weeks with an upper-injury, head coach DJ Smith announced Friday.

Zub logged just over 21 minutes of icetime in the Senators' 4-2 loss to the Wild on Thursday.

The 27-year-old has a goal and two assists in seven games this season.

Signed at a cap hit of $2.5 million, Zub is currently scheduled for unrestricted free agency in July. He joined the Senators in 2020 from the KHL and has posted 10 goals and 39 points in 135 games with the team.

Talbot nearing return

Smith also said goaltender Cam Talbot is one step closer to returning to action as he will join the Senators for their up coming road trip, which begins Saturday against the Florida Panthers.

The 6-foot-4 Caledonia, Ont., native sustained an upper-body injury prior to the start of the regular season and was given a five-to-seven week timeline.

Talbot, 35, was acquired by the Senators from the Minnesota Wild in the offseason and had a 32-12-4 record with a .911 save percentage and 2.76 goals-against average last season.

{allcanada} QB Kelly to start final regular season game for Argonauts

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Chad Kelly is slated to get his first start under centre in a regular season game for the Toronto Argonauts when they take on the Montreal Alouettes this Saturday.

Ahead of his first start, the former Ole Miss Rebel and Denver Broncos quarterback expressed his anticipation for what Saturday holds.

"I'm excited," Kelly said Thursday. "Obviously, it's been a long time waiting to play and start a meaningful game. I'm excited to get out there with the guys and just have fun."

The 28-year-old from Buffalo, nephew of Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Jelly, was acquired by the Argonauts as a negotiation list player in a trade with the Edmonton Elks in October of 2021.

Before joining the Canadian Football League, Kelly starred at the University of Mississippi after transferring from Clemson. In his 2015 junior season, Kelly posted one of the best seasons ever by a Rebels QB as he threw for 4,042 yards, scoring 41 total touchdowns and becoming the first Rebel to win Sugar Bowl MVP honours since Archie Manning in 1970.

Kelly was taken in the seventh round of the 2017 National Football League draft by the Broncos.  He spent two seasons in Denver before spending two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts (2019-20).

Taking the time to reflect on what he's learned about the Canadian game 21 weeks into the season, Kelly started with the most recognized attribute of the CFL playing surface.

"(The) field's wide," Kelly said laughing. "But holes close just as quick. There's a lot of different coverages, (a) variety of different coverages. Not too many coverages but the variety of the certain kind. That's kind of the biggest nuance of this game."

Though Kelly hasn't had meaningful reps since the preseason, he's not worried about showing any rust against the Alouettes.

"I'm going out there to have fun with the guys, try to get the ball out of my hands as fast as I can (and) meticulously go down the field and take what the defence gives me," he said.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The struggling Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Ethan Bear and forward Lane Pederson from the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday for a fifth-round draft pick.

The 25-year-old Bear had five goals and nine assists in 58 games for the Hurricanes last season, but has yet to appear in an NHL game this season. He has 13 goals and 34 assists in 190 career NHL games with Carolina and Edmonton.

"We're pleased to have added an established defenseman to our blue line," Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. "It gives the coaching staff another option with his right shot, his ability to move pucks, and his ability to get the puck out of our own end quick. (Bear's) transition game has been something that I've watched over the years that I like."

Carolina will retain $400,000 of Bear's $2.2 million contact that is due to expire at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old Pederson is scoreless in four games this season for the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League. He has a goal and four assists in 44 NHL games with Arizona and San Jose.

Vancouver hosted Pittsburgh on Friday night. The Canucks beat Seattle 5-4 on the road Thursday night to end their season-opening losing streak at a franchise-record seven games.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Axel Jonsson-Fjallby scored the go-ahead goal on a deflection during the third period and the Winnipeg Jets rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.

Adam Lowry had a goal and an assist for the Jets, who won consecutive games for the first time this season. Mark Scheifele, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Nate Schmidt and Blake Wheeler also scored for Winnipeg, which had 12 players on the scoresheet.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 39 shots.

Gabriel Vilardi scored for the second straight game for the Kings, who have dropped three of four. Trevor Moore had a goal and an assist, while Arthur Kaliyev and Blake Lizotte also scored. Jonathan Quick made 13 saves.

Brenden Dillon got a turnover deep in the offensive zone and fired a shot that Jonsson-Fjallby redirected past Quick at 14:23. Wheeler added an empty-net goal in the final minute.

The Kings took a 3-1 lead with three goals in less than five minutes during the first period. The scoring spurt included goals by Kaliyev and Lizotte during a 66-second span midway through the period.

The Jets rallied to take the lead with three straight goals, including Schmidt's snap shot from the point that found its way through traffic to give Winnipeg a 4-3 advantage with 1:05 remaining in the second.

Moore tied it at 4:45 of the third with a wrist shot that beat Hellebuyck on his blocker side.

BEHIND THE BENCH

Scott Arniel continues to coach the Jets while Rick Bowness gets more rest following his recent bout with COVID-19.

VILARDI'S HOT START

Vilardi scored at 14:33 of the first to give the Kings a 3-1 lead. He got his sixth goal of the season when he tipped in Kevin Fiala's shot after it deflected off Schmidt's stick and Hellebuyck was unable to corral the loose puck.

Vilardi - the Kings' leading scorer with 10 points - has already surpassed his goal total from last season when he had five in 25 games. His career high is 10 in 54 games during 2020-21.

His eight even-strength points are tied for second in the NHL.

STARTING IT OFF

Scheifele's breakaway goal 5:03 into the first period was his 46th career game-opening score. The center is just two shy of Ilya Kovalchuk (48) for the most in Jets/Thrashers history.

UP NEXT

Jets: Wrap up their three-game trip against the Arizona Coyotes on Friday.

Kings: Host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday in the finale of their three-game homestand.

{allcanada} Anderson's late goal lifts Canadiens to 3-2 win over Sabres

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Josh Anderson scored with just under four minutes remaining, leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

Brendan Gallagher and Kaiden Guhle also scored for the Canadiens. Sam Montembeault made 43 saves.

''I'm happy with the result,'' Montreal coach Martin St. Louis said. ''It's rare you play a perfect game. We had some highs and some lows, but we found a way.''

Anderson scored the winner with 3:46 left. Following a flurry of activity in front of the Buffalo net and a highlight-reel save by Sabres goalie Eric Comrie, the puck found its way back to Anderson, who scored on a long shot.

''I was just looking at an empty net and obviously their goalie made a nice save,'' Anderson said. ''You kind of just have to stay with it and finish the shift out and lucky Savvy had the puck there and saw me open and I was fortunate enough to get it off and squeak one in there at the end.''

Dylan Cozens and Jeff Skinner scored for Buffalo. Comrie finished with 31 saves.

''I think the second period was our big, big opportunity,'' Sabres coach Don Granato said. ''I think there we complicated some things. We could have been a little bit more intense going to the net. We tried to pass the puck into the net. Feeling good about puck movement of possession time and didn't have the killer instinct that we needed at that point, and it caught up with us.''

Cozens evened the score a 2 with 7:06 left in regulation, firing a wrist shot through traffic and screens for his third goal in four games.

Guhle gave Montreal a 2-1 lead just under seven minutes into the third period with a one-timer from the middle of the right circle.

The Canadiens opened the scoring on a fortunate bounce with 6:29 remaining in the first period. Gallagher's shot from the right circle was stopped by Comrie, but the rebound deflected off Owen Power's skate into the net.

Skinner evened the score 31 seconds into the second period on a terrific individual effort. The winger maneuvered through the right circle and forced Montembeault to commit before scoring his first goal of the season with a high shot to the glove side.

With injuries on defense heading into the game, the Sabres paired two former first overall picks together for the first time. Owen Power, the first pick in the 2021 draft, joined standout Rasmus Dahlin, the first pick in the 2018 draft, as the Sabres' top defensive pairing.

NOTES

Sabres GM Kevyn Adams said Thursday morning that defenseman Mattias Samuelsson will miss a few weeks with a knee injury. That came as good news for the Sabres, who initially feared that Samuelsson could be out for much longer. Samuelsson was injured Saturday against Vancouver. ... Buffalo defenseman Henri Jokiharju is considered week to week with a facial fracture after taking a puck to the face against Calgary on Oct. 20. ... Montreal winger Juraj Slafkovsky remained out with an upper-body injury, but is with the team for its current trip. Slafkovsky was the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft.

UP NEXT

Montreal: At St. Louis on Saturday in second game of a four-game trip.

Buffalo: Host Chicago on Saturday in second game of a four-game homestand.

Vertical Entertainment has picked up North American distribution rights to erotic horror ensemble Alone At Night (previously known as 18 & Over).

The film follows Vicky (Ashley Benson), a young woman looking for an escape after going through a tumultuous breakup. After retreating to a friend's remote cabin in the woods to clear her head, she continues modeling sexy lingerie for her devoted followers on 18 & Over, an adults-only, live-streaming website. But when the power goes out, Vicky discovers something terrifying awaiting her in the dark — a masked killer wielding a crowbar who's hellbent on bringing her night to a grisly end.

Cast comprises Benson (Pretty Little Liars), Pamela Anderson (Baywatch), Luis Guzmán (Traffic), model Winnie Harlow, musician G-Eazy, rapper A$AP Nast, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Pelas (Extraction), John Robinson (Lords of Dogtown) Cassius Corrigan (Huracán), and Sky Ferreira (Baby Driver). Social Media influencers Lindsey Pelas, Twan Kuyper, Steven Spence, Cheyrelle Fontenette, Shannon Hamilton, and Clara McGregor round out the cast.

The film's original score was composed by G-Eazy, marking the rapper's first film score.

The slasher pic is directed by Jimmy Giannopoulos and penned by Giannopoulos alongside Diomedes Raul Bermudez. The film is slated for a day-and-date release on January 20, 2023.

The film is produced by Purpose Film's Diomedes Raul Bermudez, Artemis Pictures' Siena Oberman, Cassius Corrigan, and Ashley Benson. Executive-producers are Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Terry Dougas, Jean-Luc De Fanti, and Jamin O'Brien. Peter Buntaine is cinematographer. Finance comes from Hercules Film Fund.

Tony Piantedosi negotiated on behalf of Vertical Entertainment and Rhea Films negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers. Below is a first look still from the project, which is now complete.

Vertical's SVP of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi commented: "The words 'fun' and 'terrifying' don't typically go together but Jimmy Giannopoulos has made a film where you run the gamut of emotions with a great horror story and unique casting choices that will thrill audiences this coming January."

"With Alone at Night I wanted to make the kind of movie I would have snuck into as a teen. Slasher, stoner, a sexy thriller with killer music," said director Jimmy Giannopoulos. "Playing on the nostalgia of my favorite B-horror we truly made a terrifyingly fun film. Though the themes of isolation and obsession are as old as time, culture always breeds new ways for them to manifest. You can isolate but you can't hide."

--

Canada will head to South America next month for a pair of women's friendlies against Brazil during the November FIFA international window.

The seventh-ranked Canadians will take on No. 9 Brazil on Nov. 11 and Nov. 15. Location of the games in Brazil was not announced.

"We are excited to end the year with two great games against Brazil," Canada coach Bev Priestman said in a statement. "We know both of our nations have a rich history when playing each other in big moments. Given some of the roster realities, this window will again provide us with a great opportunity to continue to test and build our depth against very good opponents."

"With our group now known for the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023, it makes coming together and climbing again that much more exciting. It's been a big year for many of our players and we are excited to hopefully end it with more excellent performances and steps forward."

Canada has an 8-9-9 record against Brazil since they first met in 1996.

The most recent meeting was at the Tokyo Olympics where the Canadians prevailed 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the quarterfinal game finished knotted at 0-0. Canada also downed Brazil 2-1 in the bronze-medal game at the 2016 Rio Olympics

The Canadian women are 10-2-3 this year and have won four straight since losing 1-0 to the U.S. in the final of the CONCACAF W Championship in Mexico in July.

Canada defeated Australia 1-0 and 2-1 last month in Brisbane and Sydney, respectively. Earlier this month, it beat Argentina 2-0 and Morocco 4-0, with both games in Spain.

Canada will play in Group B alongside World Cup co-host Australia (No. 13), Ireland (No. 24) and Nigeria (No. 45) at next summer's tournament.

Brazil is also headed to next year's World Cup.

{allcanada} Bowness won't accompany Jets on road trip

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness will not accompany the team on its three-game road trip beginning on Thursday but will take part in game-planning via Zoom, associate coach Scott Arniel told reporters Wednesday.

Bowness was not on the bench for Winnipeg's game on Monday against the St. Louis Blues as Arniel handled coaching duties. The Jets went on to win 4-0 to move to 3-3 on the season.

Earlier that day, Bowness was experiencing dizzy spells and appeared to feel unwell while speaking to reporters after the team's morning skate, causing him to cut his media availability short.

The 67-year-old tested positive for COVID-19 just before the team's season-opener on Oct. 14. He returned to the bench over the weekend against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Bowness is entering his first season as Jets' head coach after spending the past three seasons with the Dallas Stars, where he had an 89-62-25 record over 176 games. He took the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019-20, where the Stars lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Jets injury updates

Both defenceman Logan Stanley and forward Nikolaj Ehlers will accompany the Jets on their road trip.

Stanley did not skate Wednesday and according to TSN's John Lu, has been hampered by a blocked shot from Monday's game. Stanley has zero points in five games so far this season.

Ehlers, who will not play but may skate with the team on the trip according to Lu, is currently on the injured reserve list while batting a lower-body injury.

Canada's Denis Shapovalov is on to the quarterfinals of the Vienna Open.

Shapovalov upset fourth-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 on Wednesday in the event's Round of 16.

It's the seventh time the two have played each other, with the Richmond Hill, Ont., native improving to a 5-2 record against Fritz.

Both Shapovalov and Fritz had 10 aces in their match but the Canadian won 78 per cent of his service points to the American's 60 per cent.

Shapovalov also saved two of three break points to the Fritz's two of six.

He will play Dan Evans of the United Kingdom in Friday's quarterfinal.

{allcanada} ‘Ironheart’: Cree Summers Latest To Join Marvel Series, More Sacha Baron Cohen Chatter

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Veteran Canadian-American voice actress Cree Summers has joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart, sources tell Deadline. A rep for Marvel declined comment.

As Deadline reported earlier this month, Sacha Baron Cohen also has been tipped for a role in the series. Since our story ran, there has been further proof that Cohen has joined the MCU, something Marvel and Cohen's reps have refused to comment on. I hear Cohen may appear later in Ironheart's run, with Episodes 5 and 6 considered likely. In addition to in-person scenes, rumor is that there have been scans for CGI effects, which would indicate a superhero alter ego for Cohen's character. He is believed to be playing a comic book villain, probably Mephisto.

The six-episode Ironheart, created by Chinaka Hodge, stars Dominique Thorne as Marvel character Riri Williams, a genius inventor and creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. Previously announced cast also includes Anthony Ramos, Manny Montana, Shakira Barrera, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Shea Couleé, Zoe Terakes and Paul Calderón.
